ADMINISTRATION

 

1. BSEP applications are now available for fall 2011-2012 school year.  Pick
one up in the administration office from Belinda McDaniel, or send a email
request to bmcdaniel at berkeley.k12.ca for a digital copy.  Deadline is
February 25th. 

 

*2. Interested in going to Law School? Are you an activist who believes in
Restorative Justice? Do you think students should have a voice in discipline
issues at Berkeley High? Then check out the Student Court! Join the fight
against the school-to-prison pipeline which feeds the American
prison-industrial complex. Many are not aware the USA has more people behind
bars than any other country in the entire world. Our democratic values of
Justice and Liberty have been hijacked by corporate interests; and it is up
to youth activists to bring about the necessary change. For more info about
the Student Court come by H104! Enrollment for the Student Court Leadership
Class is currently open for the Spring semester. Participants will receive 5
units of elective credit. Under-represented minority youth are especially
encouraged to join the cause.

 

*3. LOVE TO DANCE??? Come Audition for Dance Production 2012. ALL STYLES
WELCOME: modern, hip hop, salsa, african, ballet, jazz, etc. AUDITION
WORKSHOPS are at lunch and after school everyday now thru next week on the A
Building stage. AUDITION is THURSDAY, MARCH 3 after school. QUESTIONS: come
see Ms. Carr in the A Building.

 

*4. Are you an artist who likes to make t-shirt designs? Are you an artist
who wants PEACE in our community?  The Urban Peace Project is seeking a logo
design and will give a prize to the winners of the design contest.  Pick up
the form for the design in the leadership office today!  Designs are due on
Thursday, March 3rd.

 

SENIORS

 

*1. Seniors! Graduation is rolling around and so is Asian graduation.  We
encourage all Asian seniors and anyone else who wants to participate in the
2011 Asian graduation ceremony to attend the first meeting today (Friday
2/25) at C334 during lunch.  Be sure to come so we can start planning right
away!

 

EVENTS

 

*1. Students: Rally for Public Education in California on March 2nd! All BHS
students are encouraged to attend a rally in defense of public education in
California on Wednesday, March 2nd at 4:30 p.m. at the Berkeley Unified
Administration building across the street at 2134 MLK Jr. Way.  Student
speakers will be featured, the Brass Liberation Orchestra will provide music
and energy and social justice art pieces will be displayed.  The rally will
last about 30 minutes and will focus on ACTIONS students, parents, teachers,
classified staff, administrators and community members can take to fight for
adequate funding and high quality education for all California students.  In
these difficult times it's important that we all stand up for the value of
education. Please join us on March 2nd.

 

*2. Black College Expo, Saturday, February 26th,2011 at the Oakland Marriott
Convention Center from 9am to 5pm.  This is an event, you don't want to
miss!

 

CLUBS

 

*1. Earphone English at lunch in C124 this Friday.  We will continue the
book "The Hunger Games".  Please bring your lunch and join us on this rainy

*2. Craving Brownies? Cookies? Cupcakes?  On Wednesday, March 2nd, the
Homeless Support Club will be having a bakesale on the Senior steps, so come
out and support!!  All proceeds will be donated to the Berkeley homeless
shelter.

 

*3. Come with your friends and grab a delicious cup of Thai tea at the C
gallery next Monday at lunch.  It'll be completely homemade and very tasty.
Don't miss out!  Only $2!  See you there!

 

*4. California Scholarship Federation is a community-service based Honors
Society open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Apply now for membership
for Spring Semester 2011. Applications are available in the College Career
Center , Rm. D221. Turn them in by today, Feb. 25. Contact Noelle Fa-Kaji at
csfbhs at gmail.com with questions.

 

*5.  Artistic, need some money, and have some free time?  Then why not use
your skills?  APIC needs somebody to design the club t-shirt for the
2010-2011 school year.  Just design the word APIC in a cool way and submit
your design to C334 by March 10.  The winner can earn a $50 cash prize and a
free t-shirt.

 

SPORTS

 

*1. Tryouts for Cheerleaders are March 7-9, 2011,  in the dance studio from
4-6pm.

 

JOBS

 

*1. The City of Berkeley's YouthWorks Employment Program in the Department
of Housing & Community Services, is pleased to announce that the official
application period for the Summer Youth Employment Program is Feb 28th
through April 1st.  Qualified Youth (14-25 years old & Berkeley residents)
are eligible to apply for jobs in a variety of sectors, including childcare,
recreation & clerical positions within city departments and various
community organizations.  The pay is $8.00/hr, and Youth may work up to 30
hrs/week for a period of 6-8 weeks.  The tentative employment start date is
late June/early July.  

To apply: Youth need to come in in person to the YouthWorks office at 2180
Milvia St. (City Hall), to sign in and pick up an application packet.  The
completed application must be turned in with required documents including
Photo ID, Social Security Card, Proof of Residence, a typed or
word-processed resume, and Parental Authorization for youth under the age of
18.   The deadline for returning the application & required documents is
April 1st, 2011. Please note the offices will be closed on March 11th and
25th as a cost-cutting measure.  For further information, contact YouthWorks

SUMMER

 

*1. The first, the best!!  The music and story that rocked the world is as
relevant today as ever.  This is the gospel according to Judas Iscariot, who
betrayed Jesus.  Judas tells his side of the story in this contemporary,
irreverent production, filled with epic rock music, poignant ballads, and
wild spectacle.  What if Jesus showed up on Telegraph Avenue today? 

Big ensemble dance numbers!  Exciting showcase for strong singer-actors!

Acting in Musical Theater Summer Intensives

Session I: July 18 - 22, 9 am to 3 pm

Session II: July 25 - 29, 9 am to 3 pm

Tuition: $375; tuition assistance available

Students will develop their skills as singer/actors by focusing on selected
scenes from musicals that are appropriate to their age and level.  In
working with these scenes and through exercises, improvisation and games, we
will help students build their vocal technique, and develop characters and
on-stage relationships.
