1. Foreign Language. Students currently enrolled at King, Longfellow and
Willard and who are studying French or Spanish at the middle school do not
have to take a placement test to continue their studies. If they wish to
enroll in a language they are not studying at King, Longfellow or Willard,
at any level other than beginning, they should take a language test. All
students coming from an Independent school and interested in taking a
language at any level other than beginning should sign up for a language
placement test. Berkeley High offers French, Kiswahili, Latin, Mandarin, and
Spanish.

The placement test for levels other than beginning will take place at 10
a.m. on April 23 in Portable 5. A make up will be offered on August 23 at 10
a.m. in Portable 5. Please contact Daniel Roose at
(Daniel_roose at berkeley.k12.ca.us) to reserve a place.

2. More on Math Placement. Students will sign up for 9th grade math. All
students will take a placement test in late April. Students currently
enrolled in King, Longfellow or Willard will take the math placement test in
their math classes at Longfellow, Willard, or King. New-to-BUSD students
will take the test the same week after school at one of the BUSD middle
schools. If any student is interested in an honors level class they will be
asked to take an additional placement test after school at the middle school
sites on one of three days offered during the week of April 18-22. All
students--even ones taking honors geometry at King, Longfellow or
Willard--must take a math placement test followed by a test for Honors if
they are interested in Honors. The dates and locations of the placement
tests have not yet been finalized. As soon as they are, we will announce on
the etree.

In addition, we will be asking current math teachers students from non-BUSD
schools to submit a short online placement recommendation. Current math
teachers of BUSD students will do the same. This is a new system and has not
yet been set up. Again, as soon as it is, we will announce details online.
A math placement team will take into account ALL factors (current grades,
placement test results, recommendations). There is no one factor more
important than another. Current BUSD Math teacher will give their students
up-to-date information as it comes available. For everyone else, I will
post on the etree.

3. Results from the first round lottery will be mailed home in May. At that
time students will receive their small learning community placement.

4. The 2011-2012 school calendar is still in negotiation. However, for
planning purposes it is safe to assume that the 9th grade orientation will
be held on the Monday of the week before the first day of school. For at
least a decade, school has started on the Wednesday before Labor Day. That
would make 9th grade orientation August 22, 2011. On that day students will
collect their actual schedule (periods, teacher's names, class location).
Students will also be assigned a locker, check out textbooks, purchase an
organizer, go on school tours, and meet members of the administration.
