SAT WORD OF THE DAY: Cynic - one who deeply distrusts human nature 

 

SENIORS:

 

1. Both the UC application (www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply) and the Cal State application (www.csumentor.edu <http://www.csumentor.edu/> ) are now available online. The deadline for the UC application is November 30.  The priority deadline for the Cal State applications is also November 30.   We urge you to get your applications in before November 30th, and preferably earlier as both websites get extremely busy (and slow) at the end of November.   Both college advisors are also available to review your applications before they are submitted, but will need a day or two of turn-around time, so don’t wait until the last minute. If you have not finished your CSU/UC Application and need help please come to the college center before school, during lunch and after school.

 

2. Seniors please access your BHS moodle account for the latest updated college center information. (College center deadlines, SAT dates etc. )

 

3.  College Essay Readers Available:  In the college center, D221  Lunch - Monday, Tuesday; Morning - Monday, Tuesday; After School- Monday, Tuesday

 

4. Senior Advising Appointments end Nov. 30  Sign-up sheets will remain up for the remainder of the semester. Because there are nearly 812 seniors, seniors may have only one scheduled half-hour appointment during the fall.  If students miss their appointment, they will not be able to sign up again. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend the meeting as long as it is okay with their student.  Seniors may drop in any day at lunch or after school without an appointment to have shorter questions answered.  College advisor assignments:  Price – AC students and CPA students, Sandberg- IHS, AHA, SSJE, and CAS students. After November 30 we will be available for walk in counseling only. ( Before school, Lunch and after school)

 

 5. FREE SAT PREP CLASS - The class meets Wednesdays from 3:45-5:45 pm., D219.  One day will focus on the math section and the other day on the critical reading section of the test.  There is no need to register in advance, just come to D219. 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS:

 

1. GATES MILLENIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM – Open to African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents of the US, with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale who have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. 2. RON BROWN SCHOLARSHIP – Open to African-American or Black high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership ability, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need who are US citizens or permanent residents.  Up to 20 students will receive $10,000 per year for four years.  Deadline:  January 9, 2011. 3. MAHATMA RICE/UNIVISION RADIO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – Mahatma Rice and Univision Radio are offering college-bound High School Seniors who reside and attend school in the Bay Area the opportunity to compete for five, two thousand dollar cash awards. To enter, students must complete an essay of 150 to 250 words. 4. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, FRESNO, PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Full in-state tuition and fees, full room rent for those living in a campus residence hall, laptop stipend.  Minimum requirements: 3.6 GPA, SAT 1800 or above, be in top of 10% of graduating class.  Scholarship application available online at http://honors.scufresno.edu <http://honors.scufresno.edu/>

5. BOSTON UNIVERSITY TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION – A four-year, full-tuition scholarship to BU.  Deadline: December 1, 2010.  For more information go to: www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee

 

6. THE IVY AND PEARLS  SCHOLARSHIP – For high school seniors who reside in San Francisco Bay Area, are African/African American, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, be enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year college in Fall 2011, show recent community involvement.  Up to $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded.  Applications are available in College Career Center.  Due Date: March 15, 2011

 

7. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP - Are you active in your community?  Have you led a project that benefits others? Have you overcome personal challenges?  You may qualify for an AXA Achievement Scholarship of $10,000 or 25,000.  Applicants must be United States citizens or legal residents, be current high school seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States by fall 2011, demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in an activity in school, the community or the workplace, and be recommended by an unrelated adult who can attest to the student’s achievement. 8. PATRICK CHARNON MEMORIAL SCHOALRSHIP - Each $1,500 scholarship is awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated their commitments to building communities. Applications are available in the College Career Center or online at  http://www.cesresources.org/apply.html  Deadline: March 31, 2011.

 

9. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:  The Berkeley Public Library has acquired a new database of scholarships.  Anyone who has a Berkeley Public Library card can go to http://berkeleypubliclibrary.org/services_and_resources/online_resources.php

Tuition Funding Sources is listed in the Grants & Scholarships section. The database is also available from the online catalogs inside the public library locations, regardless of whether users have cards.

 

10. California Association of Collectors, Inc – open to seniors planning to attend any accredited college, university or trade school.  Winners are chosen based on writing an essay entitled “Importance of Establishing and Maintaining Good Credit During Your College Years.”  Applications available in D221 and at www.cacesf.org <http://www.cacesf.org/> .  Awards range from $1,500-$2,500.  Deadline:  January 31, 2011

 

11. PDK Prospective Educator Scholarship – open to high school senior planning to major in education or undergraduate members of PDK who are enrolled in an education program at the college level.  Deadline:  March 1, 2011.  Applications available in D221 or at http://www.pdkintl.org/awards/prospective.

 

12. Elks National Foundation – 500 four-year scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who are US citizens, based on scholarship, leadership and financial need.  Scholarships range from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year.  Applications are available at www.elks.org/enf/scholars .  Received deadline:  December 1. 13. Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships – There are four different scholarships – one for each of the following: African-American students, Hispanic students, Asian-Pacific students, and one for any senior.  The scholarships are open to students eligible to attend a two or four year college, university or vocational-technical school who are legal residents of the US and are under 21 years old.  Students may apply for only one of the scholarships.  Applications are available in D221.  Scholarships awarded are a minimum of $1,000.  Deadline:  January 28, 2011.

 

14. USDA National Scholars Program – This scholarship provides full tuition, room and board, employment, and more for 4 years to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree at one of 18 HBCU campuses.  Students must major in any field of study in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or other related disciplines.  Students must be a US citizen, have a combined SAT total of 1,500 or above (using all 3 sections) or a composite ACT of 21 or above, and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.  Deadline:  February 1.  Applications available in D221.

 

*15. San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club, Miss Teen Chinatown 2011 Scholarship – applicants must be between 14-18 years on April 16, 2011, be of Chinese descent and be able to write your own name in Chinese characters, minimum GPA of 3.0 for the prior school year.  Deadline:  December 10.  Applications available in D221

 

16. COLLEGE SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS Are you planning to study math or science at a small liberal arts college? Skidmore Scholars in Science and Mathematics – S3M Scholars Program – is funded in part by a National Science Foundation grant and supports eight students in each entering class.  In order to be eligible, students must show demonstrated financial need.  Students receive financial aid packages with no loan component in the first two years and with reduced loans in years three and four. Skidmore also has the Porter Presidential Scholarships in Science and Math. These are awarded on the basis of superior accomplishment and exceptional promise in science and math, without regard to financial need.  Each Porter Scholar is awarded $15,000 per year. Applicants who wish to be considered to either program must respond to the science/math essay question on the Skidmore Supplement to the Common App., available on Skidmore’s Admissions Web site or by contacting admissions

 

FOR ALL STUDENTS:

 

1. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations: In order to recognize, support, and encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of positive race relations, Princeton University annually sponsors an annual awards program for high school students—the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Applications postmarked by January 31 will be eligible for prizes—including cash awards up to $1,000 for particularly noteworthy work. If you are a high school student involved in an activity that is helping to improve race relations in your school or community, we want to hear from you. If you know of a high school student who is helping to improve race relations, please encourage him or her to apply. 2. Are you looking for an internship? Interested in politics/city planning? The Jacquelyn McCormick Campaign of Berkeley City Council is looking for volunteers.  If you are interested contact Anna or Lara at 843-0318.

 

*3. Test Preparation Resource: The Berkeley Public Library has Learn a Test database, which provides free access to SAT practice tests and AP practice exams. SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR JUNIORS:

 

1. Herb Singer Green Scholars Program: Are you currently a Junior Attending Berkeley High School? Are you interested in developing your on the job skills?  Would you like some help with your resume and interviewing skills? Are you interested in working this summer? The Herb Singer Green Scholars program may be just what you need! The Herb Singer Green Scholars Program (HSGS) will be accepting applications from November 1 to November 30, 2010.   

 

Students completing the entire six-month program will receive:  Career skills training, Interviewing experience, Relevant work experience, Updated resumé and references, Certificate of Completion. Workshops will start early in February.  Students will earn $15.00 per session attended. 

 

This is the fourth year of the Herb Singer Green Scholars Program.  The program includes twelve weeks of workshops, and summer internships at green businesses.  The workshops will be held once a week and they will include interview skills, time management, and communication skills.   

 

There will also be field trips to green businesses every other week.  Internships will start during the last two weeks of June and go until the end of August. The interns will meet with the HSGS coordinator once a week over the summer to go over the week at work and get lunch money and transportation costs. Costs for uniforms will also be provided. 

 

Certificates of completion and letters of recommendation will be given at the end of the program.  Applications are available in the College Career Center. Due Date: November 30, 2010.

 

2. MIT Women’s Technology Program – A rigorous four week academic and residential experience at MIT for current female juniors, offering the opportunity to explore engineering through hands-on classes, labs and team-based projects.  Students may choose electrical engineering and computer science or mechanical engineering.  Application deadline:  January 15.
