California Students Weigh in on November Ballot Choices
SACRAMENTO - More than 105,000 elementary, middle school and high school
students from nearly 400 schools across the state participated in the 2010
MyVote California Student Mock Election. Students cast ballots for the
gubernatorial and U.S. Senate contests, and California's nine ballot
measures.
Headed up by Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Superintendent of Public
Instruction Jack O'Connell, the MyVote California Student Mock Election is
a hands-on civic engagement project for students across the state. The
mock election program provided teachers with resources and materials to
broaden their civics lessons and make the November 2 General Election a
teachable moment.
"While many of the students participating in the mock election aren't old
enough to vote alongside their parents on Tuesday, it was great to see so
many of them put on their training wheels and get excited about
democracy," said Secretary Bowen, California's chief elections officer.
"I hope all students who participated will push their parents or other
adults in their lives to turn out for the real statewide election on
Tuesday. The ultimate goal is to get every student who cast a mock
election ballot hooked on democracy and to be a voter for life."
Current and past mock election results, including lists of participating
schools, are available at
