Alcohol and Drugs at Berkeley High: Tuesday, October 26th at 7:00 pm in the College Career Center
With Spirit Week ahead, and Proposition 19 on the ballot, many parents may be unsure about what to say when challenged by their teens to explain the harm in smoking marijuana or drinking alcohol. Even if you think your student isn't engaged in alcohol or drug use, they certainly know someone who is, and you can provide yourself and your student with the knowledge about how this is affecting kids you know.
Some of the most compelling arguments against substance use have been developed only recently, through use of new brain imaging technologies. The PTSA is pleased to to welcome back to Berkeley High one of the East Bay's leading experts on the effects of alcohol & drugs on teenagers, Ralph Cantor, formerly of the Alameda County Office of Education. Cantor will present the latest information on how marijuana and alcohol depress teenagers' learning abilities and their long-term emotional well-being.
Mr. Cantor presented at a PTSA sponsored event on alcohol & drugs last year, and we received a tremendous number of requests to bring him back. He has also come to speak to some science classes at Berkeley High, and many students have been intrigued and engaged by his discussions. We strongly encourage all parents & students to learn the latest information about alcohol and drug use. Cantor will include a Q & A session at the end, and parents and students are strongly encouraged to ask questions.
Please don't miss this opportunity to learn more about drugs and alcohol at Berkeley High. Help to engage your student and their friends in recognizing that short-term decisions may have long-term consequences. Join the PTSA on Tuesday at 7:00 pm and bring your student along. They don't have to sit with you!
Sincerely,
Natasha Beery & Mark van Krieken
