Berkeley High School’s new School Site Council bylaws were presented for information to the School Board last night (Wed. 6/23) and will be discussed again on June 30 and August 4. If adopted, this School Site Council will replace the SGC and will have 24 members including 6 parents, 6 students (already elected), the Principal, one classified employee, and 10 teachers. These new bylaws were designed to be in compliance with state Ed Code which demands parity between school staff and the community (parents and students). Originally the model was to be 28 members but this was reduced to 24 members total. The Principal will have a separate Leadership Team comprised of Lead Teachers. It will be up to the new Principal to decide whether or not parent and student SSC reps would be invited to attend Leadership Team meetings. This new model will now conform to all the K-8 schools in Berkeley, although it is slightly different because the high school is so unique.

You can read the draft bylaws on the BUSD site. Go to http://www.berkeley.net/board-meeting-information/
and click on the board packet for June 23. Scroll down to page 95 on that pdf and you will see the draft bylaws. There may be a slightly rewritten version in the packet for the June 30 meeting and they may be revised again after the June 30 and August 4 meetings.

If you wish to make public comment about governance at Berkeley High then attend the June 30 and/or Aug. 4 meetings. Complete a speaker’s postcard before 7:30 pm and give it to the clerk.

Elections for the new Site Council will be in September.
