*1. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - the Contra Costa Japanese American Citizens
League, a non-profit organization is looking for a student volunteer who can
help them with creating a website for the organization. If you are

3. Are you looking for a way to volunteer this summer? Join Community
Reading Buddies! Read with pre-school and elementary school children to help
improve their English language skills and become a positive mentor! This
program is fun, rewarding, and looks great on college applications. For more

SENIORS

1. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - SEE College Prep is looking for high school senior
volunteers to help with running SAT prep courses this summer as teaching
assistants. SEE College Prep is a non-profit organization focused on SAT
preparation. They work to provide high quality SAT preparation courses to
students who would otherwise be unable to afford such a program. The
commitment would be 5 weeks, for about 3 hours each week. Interested seniors

2. DIPLOMAS - All diplomas will be mailed home. If you want it sent to a
different address than the one Berkeley High has on file you must give that
to the registrar, Ms. Mellion, right away.  

3. Final Transcript Request are Due Now: Seniors please turn in a Transcript
Request Form to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that she can send an official
transcript to the school you will be attending in the fall. Write "FINAL
TRANSCRIPT" in capital letters across the top of the form and paperclip it
to a stamped (postage has gone up to 44 cents!) business size envelope
addressed to the college, with Berkeley High School (1980 Allston Way,
Berkeley 94704) as the return address. If you are under 18, a parent or
guardian must sign the request form. All colleges require that students send
them a final transcript confirming their senior year grades.

4. Are you planning to attend UC Berkeley in the fall?  Consider attending
the Summer Bridge Program! It is a six-week intensive academic residential
program that begins June 25, 2010 and ends on August 6, 2010.  Summer Bridge
is designed to prepare incoming fall admits for the academic rigors of Cal.
Students are enrolled in two academic courses, workshops, and an advising
seminar.  Students are assigned an academic counselor through the Student
Life Advising Services/Education Opportunity Program (SLAS/EOP) who will
advise them during the summer and throughout their years at Cal.  Summer
Bridge is a great opportunity for students to get ahead in their coursework,
be connected to the resources and support networks on campus, and become
part of a supportive community. Financial aid is available for students who

SCHOLARSHIPS 

1. BigSun Scholarship 2010 - Open to all senior athletes regardless of the
sport. For more information go to http://www.bigsunathletics.com/ 
Application deadline is June 24, 2010.  

2. Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay Scholarship - Open
to graduating senior of Vietnamese descent with a 3.0 GPA or higher and
planning to start college in fall. Two $500 scholarships will be
awarded. Applications are available in The College Career Center and are due
5 pm on June 25.


FOR JUNIORS

*1. SUMMER COLLEGE FAIR - Colleges That Change Lives, Inc. (CTCL) is a
non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and support of a
student-centered college search process. Each Colleges That Change Lives
program begins with a 30-minute panel presentation on completing a college
search today. CTCL deans and directors will share with students the latest
research on specific campus characteristics and learning components that
lead to the most successful college experience.  Immediately after the panel
presentation, the college fair begins, lasting approximately 1.5 hours.
Students and families will be able to collect information from and speak
directly with admission representatives from the colleges and universities
that inspired noted education reporter and former New York Times education
editor Loren Pope to write the book Colleges That Change Lives.  CLC will be
hosting two events this summer: Sunday, August 1, 3pm – Santa Clara
Convention Center Exhibit Hall A and Monday, August 2, 7pm – Marin Center
Exhibit Hall

*2. Kaplan has free practice tests at Berkeley Center throughout summer.  
     SAT Practice Tests 10am-2pm on 6/19, 7/17, and 8/14
     ACT Practice Tests 10am-2pm on 6/26, 8/7 
     Personal Statement Workshop 6pm-7pm 7/28

3. Mentor/Homework helper needed in the evenings around 5pm in math and
language arts for 8th grade girl. One to two hours per week. Live 15 to 20
minutes form BHS. Looking for incoming female junior who is willing to work
with and mentor student for next two years. Good pay. If interested please

4. Like Science? Want to learn about biotechnology? Sign up for the Biotech
Academy. Applications available in G305. Program is open to students who
will be juniors in the fall. Paid summer internships are part of the
program. See Ms. Hansen for more information.

5. Juniors please stop by the college center for copies of the Summer To Do
List and Senior Profile, if you do not have your copies we handed out in
your English classes. We have extra copies on the counter in the College
Center D221.

6. College-bound athletes can now access the 2009-19 Guides on the NCAA
Eligibility Center website,www.ncaaclearinghouse.net to find important
information on how to become eligible. On the website go to "General
Information" then click on "Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete."
The Eligibility Center's registration fee is $60. Students from low-income
families should see Ms. Price or Ms. Sandberg for a fee waiver.

7. CollegeWeekLive is an online virtual college fair, with hundreds of
colleges and universities from around the world participating. Besides
virtual college fairs and open houses, attendees can watch admissions
experts speak on topics such as how to prepare for the SAT, the application
essay, and how to pay for college. Attendees can also have questions
answered via live chat with admissions experts and college students.
CollegeWeekLive is free, and can be accessed at www.collegeweeklive.com.

8. Harvard University Announcement: Harvard offers free tuition to admitted
undergraduate students with a family income of less than $60,000. To find
out more about Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than
$60,000 a year, visit Harvard's financial aid website at:
http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu or call the school's financial aid office at
(617) 495-1581.

9. SAT TEST: Register for the SAT at www.CollegeBoard.com. Students will
also be able to find tests dates, and national test center locations at this
site as well as helpful SAT prep information.

10. ACT TEST: Register for the  ACT at www.actstudent.org. Students will
also be able to find test dates, and national test centers locations at this
site as well as helpful ACT prep information.

*The college advisors last day in the office was Thursday, 6/17.  Have a
