FOR ALL STUDENTS

3. Are you looking for a way to volunteer this summer? Join Community Reading Buddies! Read with pre-school and elementary school children to help improve their English language skills and become a positive mentor! 4. Employment opportunity: Yard worker needed, please contact Ms. Carlson 510-524-1808 if you are interested in working. She lives in the Berkeley area and is looking to offer the position to a Berkeley High student. 

5. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - SEE College Prep is looking for high school senior volunteers to help with running SAT prep courses this summer as teaching assistants. SEE College Prep is a non-profit organization focused on SAT preparation. They work to provide high quality SAT preparation courses to students who would otherwise be unable to afford such a program. The commitment would be 5 weeks, for about 3 hours each week. Interested seniors should email Andres Cantero at cantero1 at stanford.edu

SENIORS

*1. DIPLOMAS – All diplomas will be mailed home.  If you want it sent to a different address than the one Berkeley High has on file you must give that to the registrar, Ms. Mellion, immediately. 

2. SENIORITIS - It's the last quarter of the senior year. Don't let your grades drop. Don't think this semester doesn't count! All four year colleges will require a copy of your official transcript after you graduate. If your grades drop, they may rescind your admission.

3. SENIOR EXIT REPORTS – If you haven't turned in the Exit Report in D221, do so NOW. The information contained in these reports is very important so that we can have accurate data of the future plans of all seniors and assess how Berkeley High is doing in college admissions. No information on an individual student will be shared without the student's permission. These forms were distributed in all senior English classes. Additional forms are available in D221. Seniors will not be able to pick up graduation tickets if they have not turned in the Senior Exit Report.

4. Final Transcript Requests are Due Now: Seniors please turn in a Transcript Request Form to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that she can send an official transcript to the school you will be attending in the fall. Write “FINAL TRANSCRIPT” in capital letters across the top of the form and paperclip it to a stamped (postage has gone up to 44 cents!) business size envelope addressed to the college, with Berkeley High School (1980 Allston Way, Berkeley 94704) as the return address. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the request form. All colleges require that students send them a final transcript confirming their senior year grades.

SCHOLARSHIPS 

1. 2010 CANERS Foundation Scholarship – Open to high school seniors who are entering college in a horticulture-related field in the fall. Applications must be postmarked no later than June 15, 2010. Applications available in the College Center.

2. BigSun Scholarship 2010 -  Open to all senior athletes regardless of the sport. For more information go to http://www.bigsunathletics.com/ Application deadline is June 24, 2010.  

3. LAHF Dise/Gardere/Smith Scholarship - Open to seniors with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, come from disadvantaged backgrounds, have shown commitment to aiding their community and intend to return to their community after college to assist the less fortunate. Applications are available in the College Career Center and must be postmarked by June 15, 2010.

4. Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay Scholarship – Open to graduating senior of Vietnamese descent with a 3.0 GPA or higher and planning to start college in fall. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. Applications are available in the College Career Center and are due 5pm on June 25.

JUNIORS

1. College-bound athletes can now access the 2009-10 Guides on the NCAA Eligibility Center website, www.ncaaclearinghouse.net to find important information on how to become eligible. On the website go to "General Information" then click on "Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete." The Eligibility Center's registration fee is $60. Students from low-income families should see Ms. Price or Ms. Sandberg for a fee waiver.

2. CollegeWeekLive is an online virtual college fair, with hundreds of colleges and universities from around the world participating. Besides virtual college fairs and open houses, attendees can watch admissions experts speak on topics such as how to prepare for the SAT, the application essay, and how to pay for college. Attendees can also have questions answered via live chat with admissions experts and college students. CollegeWeekLive is free, and can be accessed at www.collegeweeklive.com.

3. Harvard University Announcement: Harvard offers free tuition to admitted undergraduate students with a family income of less than $60,000. To find out more, visit Harvard's financial aid website at:

4. SAT TEST: Register for the SAT at www.CollegeBoard.com. Students will also be able to find test dates, and national test center locations at this site as well as helpful SAT prep information.
