1. LOTTERY RESULTS. The letters with incoming 9th grade lottery results
(small learning school assignments) will be taken to the district mail room
on Friday morning (June 4). With luck they will be in the US mail that
afternoon. If not, they will go out on Monday.

2. MATH RESULTS. The letters will NOT contain the results of the Math
placement test. Those results will be mailed home in a separate letter at
the end of next week (June 11).

3. FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT. Incoming 9th grade students who are starting
a foreign language at the beginning level do not have to take a placement
exam. If your child wishes to enroll in a language class at a higher than
beginning level and is not currently enrolled in a BUSD middle school
foreign language class , he or she must take a placement exam. These
placement exams for Spanish, French, and Latin will be offered on June 23,
24, 25 from 1 to 2 p.m. in Portable 8 and on August 24 and 25 from 10 to
noon in Portable 8 again. If you have questions, please contact Daniel
Roose at daniel_roose at berkeley.k12.ca.us or Samantha Borg at
samantha_borg at berkeley.k12.ca.us

4. JAZZ ADVISORY AUDITIONS. BHS Jazz and Choral Director Scott Dailey
writes:

The Berkeley High School jazz program will hold advisory auditions for
8th-graders on Thursday, June 10, at 5 p.m. in the band room (A201),
upstairs in the music building at BHS. The music building is directly
across the courtyard from the main administration building at 1980 Allston
Way. The purpose of the advisory auditions will be to give 8th-graders an
idea of whether they should enroll in Jazz Lab Band 1 (the lower band) or
Jazz Lab Band 2 (the middle band). The actual auditions for all the jazz
bands, including the Jazz Ensemble (top band), will be held in early
September after school begins. Students will have an opportunity to adjust
their schedules as needed, once they know which band they will be playing
in. The exceptional freshman may be assigned to the Jazz Ensemble; in most
cases, however, freshmen play in either Jazz Lab 1 or Jazz Lab 2.

The advisory audition will consist of the following:

*	Playing scales from the attached scale sheet (contact Mr. Dailey to
obtain a copy)
*	Playing blues in concert F
*	Sight-reading a simple piece
*	Optional: Playing a prepared jazz piece

The advisory assignment will be based on:

*	Tone quality
*	Jazz feel
*	Improvisational ability while playing blues, including phrasing and
melodic sense
*	Sight-reading ability

If you have questions, please feel free to email me at
sdailey at berkeley.k12.ca.us .

I look forward to hearing your students play on June 10.

Sincerely yours,
Scott Dailey
BHS Jazz and Choral Director
