Subject: Thurs May 13th Two Important Education Events
Importance: High
Dear Parent, Guardians and Community Members,
We are writing to ask for your help in turning out 50+ members of the
Berkeley community to a hearing on the state budget which will be held on
Thursday, May 13th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Albany High School Little
Auditorium. This hearing is being held by the new Speaker of the Assembly,
John Perez, and Assemblymember Nancy Skinner. This is one in a series of
events being held across the state and part of an effort by the new Speaker
to have a more transparent budget process. See below for more information.
It is critical that the citizen voice be heard in this process, and that in
particular those of us involved in education show, by our presence and our
words, the impact of inadequate state funding on our children and youth. It
is critical that all of us attend and speak to the devastating impacts of
the $18 billion cut from education the past two years, and the proposed $2.5
billion in cuts proposed for next year. We need to advocate for providing
the public services and robust public education needed to have a civilized
state and a bright future.

Wollenberg, Berkeley City College potluck supper begins at 6:00 p.m.,

Please join us for this final event where we explore the history of Berkeley

factors about Berkeley that have resulted in where our schools are located,
and who populates them? What insights might we gain as we move forward in
our efforts to eliminate racial predictability in academic achievement?
Come hear Dr. Charles Wollenberg (Chair of the Department of Social Sciences
at Berkeley City College), Berkeley Historian and author of
"Berkeley: A City in History," as he discusses the history of Berkeley and
our school district. Join us for the open discussion immediately following
his presentation as we tackle some of these pressing questions.
