Last week we announced a number of upcoming dates for Incoming Families.
Two of them have been changed: The 8th Grade Information Night is now
scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 24 and the Willard Parent Night is March 16.
The complete announcement with all dates and important information for
families coming from NON BUSD middle schools is below.

1. The Berkeley High 8th Grade Information Night 2010 for all incoming
families will take place on Wednesday, February 24 from 7:00-9:00 in the
Berkeley Community Theater on the Berkeley High School campus.  At
Information Night representatives from departments and our six learning
communities -  AC, AHA!, BIHS, CAS, CPA, and the new Green Academy – will
make presentations and be available to answer questions.  Information Night
is an important step in learning about Berkeley High’s many choices and
options so you can make an informed decision about your learning community
and course preferences. All students, parents, and guardians should plan on
attending. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Spanish translation
will be available.  There will be no make-up for this event.  Course
Catalogues and Choices Brochures will be available in the BHS office after
Feb. 24.

2. 8th Grade Students who are already enrolled in BUSD will be automatically
rolled over into Berkeley High.  There is no need for students from King,
Longfellow, or Willard to contact Admissions.   A BHS Administrator and
counselor will go to the Middle School sites to meet with parents and gather
student course and learning community requests.  These meetings are for
parents from BUSD middle schools only.  During the school days following the
parent meeting, BHS Counselors will go to the Middle Schools to gather
course and learning community requests. Parent meetings will take place from
6:00-7:00 on the following nights; Spanish translation will be available:

   King, March 2
   Longfellow, March 9
   Willard, March 16

3. Families coming from non-BUSD feeder schools must enroll in the District
before they can make learning community or course requests.  Enrollment is a
two part process: pre-enrollment and enrollment.
a. Starting January 13, families can log on to
http://www.berkeley.net/index.php?page=high-school to pre-enroll in the
District.  Pre-enrollment via the web will end on Sunday, February 7 at 4:00
pm. If you do not have web access, you may use a computer on the BHS campus
at the Parent Resource Center from 9:00-3:00 starting January 19.

b. Following Pre-Enrollment, a parent or guardian must come into the
Admissions Office (1835 Allston Way) to complete the enrollment process.  A
receipt of completed enrollment, with a student id #, will be given to you.
If you did not already pre-enroll, you may do so on the day you enroll. The
office will be open the week of  2/8-2/11 for high school age enrollment
from 8:00 to 12:00 and 12:45 to 2:30.  No high school enrollment for
2010-2011 will take place before this week and those who enroll after 2/11
will:  a) Not be in the first lottery run; and b) Not be allowed to enroll
until after March 22.

In order to minimize wait times, we are advising that new families adhere to
the following schedule:

Last Names                        Please come to Admissions on

       A-F                              February 8
       G-L                              February 9
       M-S                              February 10
       T-Z                              February 11

If you are unable to make your assigned day we will accommodate you;
however, adherence to the schedule will help us manage the volume of
students we must process and allow us to serve all families in a more
efficient manner.

Whether you are already enrolled in a BUSD middle school or are a non-BUSD
student enrolling in February, you will enter the BHS lottery at the same
time. As long as you are enrolled in the District by 2/11/10, you will be
given the same priority in the BHS lottery.

On your Enrollment day, bring the original and a copy of the following
documents:

I. A Birth Certificate

II. Proof of Berkeley residence – originals of any THREE from the following
list of CURRENT documentation. At least one must be from category “d”, and
must be imprinted with the name and Berkeley address of the parent/guardian
in order to establish proof of residency:

a) California Driver’s License or ID
b) Current bank statement
c) Action letter from Social Services, a letter from the State Office for
Medi-Cal, a letter from the employer on company letterhead or a paycheck
stub
d) PG&E bill, phone bill (non-cellular), EBMUD bill, garbage bill or cable
bill

III. Proof of immunization for polio, DPT (diphtheria, tetanus and
pertussis), measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis B and chickenpox is required
by STATE LAW.

IV. Copy of latest report card, transcript or some kind of grade proof.

Students residing with someone other than their parents must also complete a
Caregiver Form.  Forms are available at the Admissions Office. Homeless
families should contact Nancy Johnson in Room 5, or call her at 644-6529.

4. Students who are new to BUSD, and completed the enrollment process in
February, will make course requests in the BHS Library from 6-8 pm on March
1 (Last Name A-L) and March 8 (Last Name M-Z).  There will be one makeup
session held on Monday, March 15.  Please bring your confirmation of
enrollment with ID# and a copy of your transcript. If you cannot make your
assigned night, we will accommodate you in one of the three sessions, but
please try to attend during your allotted time.

5. Students who are new to BUSD but miss the February enrollment must enroll
at the Admissions Office after March 22.  Another lottery run will take
place for these students and they will be placed in a learning community
based on space available.  Course requests will be taken for these students
in late April and will be done by appointment with the counselor.
