SAT WORD OF THE WEEK: Caustic; corrosive; that which can destroy tissue by chemical action
FOR SENIORS
1. College Advisor appointments are available. Sign up in Rm. D221. Drop in
times are before school, lunch time, and after school.
2. Senior Profile: If you are applying to private colleges that need a
counselor recommendation, see Ms. Price or Ms. Sandberg immediately. You do
NOT need to fill these out if you are applying only to the UCs, Cal State
Universities or community colleges.
3. UC/CSU: Application deadline November 30.
4. FREE SAT PREP CLASS - The class meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
3:30-5:30 pm. One day will focus on the math section and the other day on
the critical reading section of the test. There is no need to register in
advance, just come to H103. For more information, go to www.ptps.org, or
come to D221. This class is for Berkeley High seniors.
*5. If you are a first generation, low income student and are applying to the CSU or UC, we urge you to apply to the EOP (Equal Opportunity Program). These programs will provide extra academic, financial and guidance support. You must apply for this program through the online UC or CSU application. Please see Ms. Sandberg or Ms. Price if you have questions. In order to be considered for the EOP program, you must file your application by Nov. 30, 2009.
*6. Financial Aid Information Night, part 2, Thursday, December 3. Provides information on filling out the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) line by line and information on the CSS Profile. BHS Library 6:30-8:00 p.m.
*7. COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOPS: Monday 11/23 and Tuesday 11/24 CSU and UC Application workshops from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you need help with your CSU or UC application or just want Ms. Sandberg or Ms. Price to look over your applications please come to the College Center on Monday or Tuesday. Application deadline is Monday, November 30.
*8. ESSAY READERS - Get feedback on your draft of your college essay/personal statement from experienced essay readers, College Center D221. First come, first served, except at 2:45 to 4 Monday and Tuesday this week by appointment only, sign up in the College Center.

9. COLLEGE VISITS
Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career Center every year. Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the
permission of the teacher whose class they are missing. Sign up in advance
in the College/Career Center and pick up a permission slip. The complete
November and December lists are available in the College Center D221. Juniors cannot attend these meetings.

11. SCHOLARSHIPS
Ron Brown Scholarship - Open to African-American or Black high school
seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership ability,
participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need
who are US citizens or permanent residents. Up to 20 students will receive
$10,000 per year for four years. Deadline: January 9. Apply at
www.ronbrown.org.
Gates Millennium Scholars Program - Open to African American, American
Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic
American students who are citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents
of the US, with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
who have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in
community service, extracurricular or other activities and meet the Federal
Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Deadline: January 12, 2009. Applications
available in D221 or at www.gmsp.org.
Eighth Annual National Co-op Scholarship Program - The National Commission for Cooperative Education, on behalf of the eight NCCE Partner Colleges and
Universities, is pleased to announce and sponsor its Eighth Annual National
Co-op Scholarship Program. As the largest independently sponsored merit
co-op scholarship program in the United States, the National Commission will award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each, for a total renewable value of $4,200,000. These merit co-op scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and transfer students who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of our Partner Colleges: Drexel University, Johnson and Wales University, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Student must be seniors and have a 3.5 or better GPA. Application deadline Feb. 15, 2010.
KFC Scholarship
The Scholarship offered by the KFC Colonel's Scholars Program provides
funding for: tuition, fees, books, room and board. Awards can be up to
$5,000 per year. The scholar could receive up to $20,000 over four years to
help complete a bachelor's degree. To be eligible to compete for the KFC
Colonel's Scholars Scholarship, an individual must: Graduate from high
school this academic year (between 12/1/09 and 8/31/10). Earn a minimum
cumulative high school GPA of 2.75. Plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a
public, in-state college or university (start date no later than 9/30/10).
Be a US citizen or permanent resident. Demonstrate financial need. Selection Process: Completing the online application is the first step. NOTE: The 2010 application process opens on December 1, 2009. Visit www.kfcscholars.org to apply. After February 10, 2010, all submitted applications will be reviewed and semifinalists selected. Semifinalists will be asked to provide additional documentation in March 2010. After the semifinalist information is received, an independent selection committee will meet to select the KFC Colonel's Scholars.
ALL STUDENTS
1. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations: In order to recognize, support,
and encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a
commitment to advancing the cause of positive race relations, Princeton
University annually sponsors an annual awards program for high school
students -- the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Applications postmarked
by January 31 will be eligible for prizes -- including cash awards up to
$1,000 for particularly noteworthy work.
- If you are a high school student involved in an activity that is helping
to improve race relations in your school or community, we want to hear from
you.
- If you know of a high school student who is helping to improve race
relations, please encourage him or her to apply.
