SAT WORD OF THE DAY: Anarchy: lack of any government; chaos

FOR SENIORS
1. College Advisors appointment are available, come to Rm. D221 and sign up
for an appointment. Drop in times are before school, lunch time, and after
school.
2. FREE SAT PREP CLASS - The class meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
3:30-5:30 pm. One day will focus on the math section and the other day on
the critical reading section of the test. There is no need to register in
advance, just come to H103. For more information, go to www.ptps.org, or
come to D221. This class is for Berkeley High seniors.
3. ESSAY READERS - Get feedback on your draft of your college essay/personal
statement from experienced essay readers, College Center D221. First come
first served.

College Center (depending on availability). You must sign up in advance in

*6. COLLEGE VISITS
Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career Center
every year. Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the
permission of the teacher whose class they are missing. Sign up in advance
in the College/Career Center and pick up a permission slip. The complete
October list is available in the College Center D221. Juniors cannot attend
these meetings.

8. SCHOLARSHIPS
*The Horatio Alger California Scholarship Program provides financial
assistance to students in the State of California who have exhibited
integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire
to pursue higher education. Eligibility To be eligible to apply for the
Horatio Alger California Scholarships, applicants must meet the following
criteria: be enrolled full time as a high school senior in California,
progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no
later than the fall following graduation; have a strong commitment to pursue
and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the
United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution
and then transfer to a four-year institution); critical financial need
($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher,
an explanation must be provided); involvement in co-curricular and community
activities; demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of
2.0);be a resident of California; and be a citizen of the United States

Coca-Cola Scholarship for high school seniors who demonstrate leadership and
academic achievement. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
planning to attend an accredited university. Must have a GPA of 3.0.

*The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States'
largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community
service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with
the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor
middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at
the local, state, and national level. Deadline Nov. 2. For more information
visit www.prudential.com/spirit.
*Ron Brown Scholarship - Open to African-American or Black high school
seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership ability,
participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need
who are US citizens or permanent residents. Up to 20 students will receive
$10,000 per year for four years. Two deadlines: November 1 and January 9.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program - Open to African American, American
Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic
American students who are citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents
of the US, with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
who have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in
community service, extracurricular or other activities and meet the Federal
Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Deadline: January 12, 2009. Applications
