SAT WORD OF THE DAY: Exalt -- to glorify; to praise highly

FOR SENIORS
1. College Advisors appointment are available, come to Rm. D221 and sign up for an appointment. Drop in times are before school, lunch time, and after school.

2. FREE SAT PREP CLASS – The class meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 pm. One day will focus on the math section and the other day on the critical reading section of the test. There is no need to register in advance, just come to H103. For more information, go to www.ptps.org, or come to D221. This class is for Berkeley High seniors.

3. ESSAY READERS – Get feedback on your draft of your college essay/personal statement from experienced essay readers, College Center D221. First come first served.

Essay Readers Schedule
Monday -- 9 to 10 am, Lunch 12:25 to 1 pm, 6th and after school 2:45 to 4 pm      
Tuesday -- 8:15 to 9 am, Lunch 11:30 to 12:10 pm, 6th and after school 2:45 to 4 pm     
Wednesday -- 8 to 9 am, Lunch 11:30 to 12:10 pm, 6th and after school 2:45 to 4 pm       
Thursday -- 8 to 8:30 am, Lunch 11:30 to 12:10 pm, 6th and after school 2:45 to 4 pm     
Friday -- 8 to 8:30 am, Lunch 11:30 to 12:10 pm.  No afterschool on Fridays except for Friday before Thanksgiving
                                                                     
4. ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOPS
Sign up in advance in the College/Career Center D221, and find out location of workshop.

5. COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOPS – All held in the Library Computer Lab or College Center (depending on availability). You must sign up in advance in the College/Career Center to attend. 15 person maximum per workshop.

6. Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career Center every year. Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the permission of the teacher whose class they are missing. Sign up in advance in the College/Career Center and pick up a permission slip. The complete October list is available in the College Center D221. Juniors cannot attend these meetings.

8. SCHOLARSHIPS 
Ron Brown Scholarship – Open to African-American or Black high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership ability, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need who are US citizens or permanent residents. Up to 20 students will receive $10,000 per year for four years. Two deadlines: January 9. Apply at www.ronbrown.org. 

Gates Millennium Scholars Program – Open to African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents of the US, with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale who have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Deadline: January 12, 2009. Applications available in D221 or at www.gmsp.org. 

Coca-Cola Scholarship for high school seniors who demonstrate leadership and academic achievement. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident planning to attend an accredited university. Deadline: Oct. 31 Award: $10,000-$20,000

ALL STUDENTS
1. Cal State East Bay - Preview Day October 24, 2009, 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Learn about academic programs and majors, attend presentations on admission and financial aid, meet students from different clubs and organizations, go on tours of the campus and residence hall. 2. COLLEGE INFORMATION DAY – Saturday, October 17, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, UC Berkeley, Wheeler Hall. Over 60 public college and university representatives will be available to speak with you. Pre-register online (not required, but helpful) at www.eastbayconsortium.org. For more information, call 510-238-9450.  

3. UCLA Performing and Visual Arts Information meeting, Wednesday October 21, 2009 6:30 pm-8:00pm, Hilton Garden Inn San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. (All departments.) Learn about the variety of performing and visual arts majors at UCLA.

4. Alameda Unified School District City Wide College Night, Wednesday, Oct. 21st, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the College of Alameda Gym. Over 50 Colleges will be participating in this free event for student and their families.
