College Advisor's Bulletin

Please note:  The BHS College Advisor's Bulletin in now a weekly bulletin and will no longer be issued on a daily basis.  Check this bulletin for all important annoucements for the week of September 21 to 25, 2009.

FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS 
PSAT -- Berkeley High School is offering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14 from 8:30-11:30. All sophomores will automatically be registered for the test and can take it for free, due to a generous donation from an anonymous donor.  Juniors can register with Ms. Reed in D173 at lunchtime and immediately after school beginning Monday Sept. 21.  Cost is $20.  Fee reductions are available for low income students. Please see Ms. Price or Ms. Sandberg in D221.  The PSAT is an excellent practice test for the SAT, which is required by the UCs, Cal States and many private schools.  For juniors only, it is also the qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarships.   
  
FOR SENIORS 
College Advisors appointment are available, come to Rm. D221 and sign up for an appointment. 
Drop in times are before school, lunch time, and after school. 
  
Incentive Awards Program -- Find out about this excellent scholarship/mentorship/leadership development program for students applying to UC Berkeley.  You are eligible to apply if you are UC eligible, have a minimum unweighted 3.5 GPA from your UC approved classes taken in 10th and 11th grades, come from a low income family, and are a US citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen.  Stop by the college center on Monday Sept. 21 to find out about the time and 
date of the informational meeting. 
  
College Essay readers will be in the college center beginning Monday Sept. 21 at lunch time in the College Center D221.  Please come and get help with your college essays. 
  
College List -- Early Action/ Early Decision College Lists are due in the College Center 
D221 on Oct. 15. All students who are applying to private colleges and need a counselor recommendation remember to give us the Secondary School Report, stamped manila envelope, and blue transcript request form for each college you intend to apply to.  If your college list is not in the College Office on or before Oct.15, we cannot guarantee we will be able to complete a counselor recommendation for you.  If you have questions please come to D221. 
  
*FREE SAT PREP CLASS -- Starts Monday, September 21 in H103.  The class will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 pm.  One day will focus on the math section and the other day on the critical reading section of the test.  There is no need to register in advance, just come to H103.  For more information, go to www.ptps.org, or come to D221. 
  
Over 100 college representatives visit the Berkeley High College/Career Center every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the permission of the teacher whose class they are missing.  Sign up in advance in the College/Career Center and pick up a permission slip.  The complete September list is available in the college center and was handed out to all seniors last week in class.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – LATE REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED! Friday, September 26 is the late registration deadline for the October 10 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.

Cal State East Bay -- Preview Day October 24, 2009, 8: a.m.-12:30 p.m.:  Learn about academic programs and majors, attend presentations on admission and financial aid, meet students from different clubs and organizations, and go on tours of the campus and residence hall.
