Attention, Jazz Players!

Auditions for the world-renowned Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble will be next week, September 8 – 11.  All audition sessions will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room A201 (band room).  They will be held by Scott Dailey (the jazz director) and outstanding Bay Area professional jazz players. A sign-up sheet will be posted on Scott's door – A206H in the music building.  Auditions are open to all BHS students.  The only way to get into this great band is to try out – so give it your best shot!

Here's the schedule:

Rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, drums, vibes):  Tuesday, September 8, hosted by Scott and Josh Jones

Trumpets:  Wednesday, September 9, hosted by Steve Campos

Trombones:  Thursday, September 10, hosted by Marty Weiner

Saxes, strings, flutes, other woodwinds – Friday, September 11, hosted by Dave Ellis and Dave LeFavre

Non-drummers will be asked to play the following:

Chromatic scale covering the range of the instrument

Various other scales (major, minor, blues)

Sight-reading

12-bar blues improvisation (accompanied by a rhythm section)

Drummers will be asked to play a variety of grooves (swing, rock, funk, Latin, etc.) and demonstrate skill with both sticks and brushes.  They will also be asked to accompany a soloist and to play a solo within a 12-bar blues format.

Jazz Ensemble meets 7th period and involves a significant time commitment outside regular school hours.  We look forward to hearing you play!
