URGENT ALERT - Gov. Schwarzenegger has frozen all Cal Grants awarded to
students in the class of 2009. He has proposed that the Cal Grant program
be eliminated as part of his new budget. Write a letter to your state
legislative representatives and to the governor against this proposal.

Let them know what it will mean to you and others that you know. For a
sample letter, go to https://www.calpirgstudents.org/action/save-cal-grants
. Please add your personal story or viewpoint to the form letter. More
information can also be found on the Facebook group, Save Cal Grants.

The Cal Grant is currently an entitlement program, which means that all
students who are eligible and apply by the deadline receive the Cal Grant.

There are several types of Cal Grants available. They typically cover all
fees for UC's and Cal States for college students during their sophomore
through senior years, for some freshmen, and some tuition (up to $9,700) for
students attending private colleges in California. For some students,
including those at community college, it also provides an additional $1,551
per year. While the cost of attending California public colleges and
universities is increasing every year, the governor is proposing to cut this
important life-line for low income families. ACT NOW!
