SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DISCREPANCY -- disagreement; inconsistency.  I was concerned when I found a $10,000 discrepancy between my own financial records and my monthly bank statement.

PAID Summer Day Camp Jobs and VOLUNTEER Internships at Camp Galileo. World Affairs Council Summer Institute on International Affairs - The program meest once a week from 3-7 PM beginning the week of June 15 through the week of August 3. Students complete assigned readings and writing assignments, then meet to discuss the evening’s topic and may meet with that day’s speaker. Following this discussion, students attend a public lecture. Participants must commit to attending all meetings. Upon successful completion, students will receive a one-year membership to the World Affairs Council enabling them to attend programs. Summer Institute speakers include: General David Petraeus, Commander of US Central Command, Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox, and Michael Pollan, Author, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. FOR JUNIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- May 15 is the late registration deadline for the June 6 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 22 is the late registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  These are the last tests offered before September 2009.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
*Outward Bound West -- This program offers many options for short and long term programs.  Cost varies with the program, but they offer many scholarships.  Information at www.obwest.org .  Rolling admission.   

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS -- Cal Trans is sponsoring a two-week Summer Engineering Institute at San Francisco State from July 19-31.  Cost -- FREE.  Students live on campus to explore engineering. FOR SENIORS

Tuesday, June 2 -- Last day for seniors to turn in a Transcript Request Form to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that we can send an official transcript to the school they will be attending in the fall.  Write “FINAL TRANSCRIPT” in capital letters across the top of the form and paperclip it to a stamped (postage has gone up to 44 cents!) business size envelope addressed to the college, with Berkeley High School (1980 Allston Way, Berkeley 94704) as the return address.  If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the request form.  All colleges require that students send them a final transcript confirming their senior year grades.

Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) open travel program for college students -- Dandole Alas a Tu Exito/Giving Flight to Your Success.  A panel of judges comprised of college professors and education advocates from coast to coast will gather in the summer to select the students who will receive free travel to their colleges and universities.  Each student is eligible to receive from one to four tickets that the student or an immediate family member can use in the Fall 2009 to travel to/from a college or university.  The travel tickets are awarded to undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students with socio-economic need who journey away from home to pursue higher education.  Essay required. SCHOLARSHIPS

Univision Exito Escolar -- Open to current Latino seniors who reside in Alameda, Contra Costa, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano or Sonoma County. Essays in English and Spanish are required.  Scholarship amounts vary from $500 to $2,000. US CITIZENSHIP OR PERMANENT RESIDENCY IS NOT REQUIRED.  Applications available in D221.  Applications must be received at the Univision office by 5:00 pm on July 31. 

Latino College Dollars -- list of scholarships open to Latino students with at least a 2.5 GPA.  Deadlines vary.  Pick up the list in D221.  

Bay Area Gardeners Foundation -- Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who have financial need who are willing to do 20 hours or more of community service each semester and who live in one of the 9 Bay Area counties.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 17.  

Los Hermanos de Stanford -- Open to outstanding Latino seniors who plan to attend a two or four year college in the fall and has financial need.  Students are NOT REQUIRED to attend Stanford. Two $800 scholarships will be awarded Applications available at www.stanford.edu/group/hermanos/scholarships.html and in D221. Deadline:  May 15.

LAHF Dise/Gardere/Smith Scholarship Fund -- Open to any low-income high school senior going to college fall 2009.  There will be two scholarships awarded, $1,000 each. Deadline: May 15.
