STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
May 12, 2009           

ADMINISTRATION

1.  BART tickets are in, please pick them up today at lunch in D224.

2.  Seniors: Achievers will be here, both at lunch and after school, to distribute caps, gowns and pre-ordered graduation announcements Thursday, May 14 for last names (A-L) and Friday, May 15th for last names (M-Z). Location has not yet been determined but will likely be in the courtyard. Students should check with the front desk if uncertain.

*3.  Congratulations!!! To the Jazz Lab Band II and Combos for a job well done at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 10.  The Combos each received superior ratings and the Jazz Lab Band II received an excellent rating.  Combo I and II members: Nicholas Lamb, Grant Milliken, Chet Mahoney, Harrison Reinisch, and Harry Meyerson.

4.    The Dance Projects dance class needs graphic designers!  If you would like to submit artwork to be printed on our t-shirts, or posted on our flyers, please submit your ideas by Friday to Ms. Zakon's school mailbox, directly to Ms. Zakon, or to any student in Dance Projects.  The winner will receive two free tickets to the Dance Projects show on May 29/30 and have their work recognized in the show program.

CLUBS

1.  Interested in discovering more ways to live sustainably?  Care about protecting and conserving the environment?  Come by to the Environmental Issues club and find out how you can help the current issues facing our planet through making changes to your own life and by working on fun conservation projects for your community and school. 2.  Join us for a late fiesta!  Cooking club will meet Wednesday, May 13 at 3:30 pm in H106.  There will be a nacho bar, burrito bar along with Spanish rice and refried beans.  Yum!  Hope to see you there.

SPORTS

The Berkeley High School Boys Varsity would like you to join them on a quest into the 2009 NCS playoffs. After defeating league rival 11-3 last Friday, the Yellow Jackets earned a birth in the the NCS playoffs as a 5th seed, and also became the BSAL 2009 League Champions. The Yellow Jackets ended the regular and league playoffs with a record of 16 wins and 1 loss (that took place the very first game of the season). On Wednesday May 13 the Yellow Jackets host University High school from San Francisco at 7 pm on the football field. 

SENIORS

1.  NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR COLLEGE CHOICES?  Your college advisor has a list of schools that are still accepting applications. 

2.  Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) open travel program for college students - Dandole Alas a Tu Exito/Giving Flight to Your Success.  A panel of judges comprised of college professors and education advocates from coast to coast will gather in the summer to select the students who will receive free travel to their colleges and universities.  Each student is eligible to receive from one to four tickets that the student or an immediate family member can use in the Fall 2009 to travel to/from a college or university.  The travel tickets are awarded to undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students with socio-economic need who journey away from home to pursue higher education.  Essay required. SCHOLARSHIPS

1.  Fullwood Scholarship - Open to seniors who are planning to attend UC Berkeley next year.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 14.

2.  Bay Area Gardeners Foundation - Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who have financial need who are willing to do 20 hours or more of community service each semester and who live in one of the 9 Bay Area counties.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 17. 

3.  Los Hermanos de Stanford - Open to outstanding Latino seniors who plan
to attend a two or four year college in the fall and has financial need.
Students are NOT REQUIRED to attend Stanford.  Two $800 scholarships will be awarded Applications available at http://www.stanford.edu/group/hermanos/scholarships.html and in D221. Deadline: May 15.

4.  LAHF Dise/Gardere/Smith Scholarship Fund -- Open to any low-income high school senior going to college Fall 2009.  There will be two scholarships awarded of $1,000 each. Deadline: May 15. Applications available in D221.


JUNIORS

1.  SIGN UP TO MEET WITH YOUR COLLEGE ADVISOR - If you have not previously signed up for an appointment, you can do so now.  Don't miss this opportunity to get a start on your college admissions process.  Sign up in D221.

2.  SAT/ACT TEST DATES - May 8 was the regular registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  May 15 is the late registration deadline for the June 6 SAT and SAT subject tests.  These are the last tests offered before September 2009.  Fee waivers for low income students for the ACT are available in D221. 

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS

Cal Trans is sponsoring a two-week Summer Engineering Institute at San Francisco State from July 19-31.  Cost - FREE.  Students live on campus to explore engineering. EVENTS/PERFORMANCES

*1.  Berkeley High African American Studies presents: "Rhytmns of Life" Friday, May 15 at 7pm in the Community Theater.  $10 reserved  seating, $7 general, $5 students, and $3 seniors. 2.  Want to be part of one of Broadway's biggest hits?  YMTC announces
auditions for its fall production of A CHORUS LINE.  Calling all dancers,
