STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
May 7, 2009           

ADMINISTRATION

1.  BART tickets are in, please pick them up today at lunch in D224.

2 . The Dance Projects dance class needs graphic designers!  If you would
like to submit artwork to be printed on our t-shirts, or posted on our
flyers, please submit your ideas by Friday to Ms. Zakon's school mailbox,
directly to Ms. Zakon, or to any student in Dance Projects.  The winner will
receive two free tickets to the Dance Projects show on May 29th/30th and
have their work recognized in the show program.


CLUBS

1.  If you're interested in reading books by women and talking about them
come to the Women's Literature Club at lunch on Thursday!  It meets in Ms.
Cunnane's room in A05.  See you there!

2.  Interested in discovering more ways to live sustainably?  Care about
protecting and conserving the environment?  Come by to the Environmental
Issues club and find out how you can help the current issues facing our
planet through making changes to your own life and by working on fun
conservation projects for your community and school.  [etree note: please

*3.  Join us for a late fiesta!  Cooking club will meet Wednesday, May 13 at
3:30 pm in H106.  There will be a nacho bar, burrito bar along with Spanish
rice and refried beans.  Yu8m!  Hope to see you there.


SENIORS

1.  Are you interested in becoming Sr. Prom Queen or King?  Stop by D148 for
an application!  Also, Achievers will be here this Friday to distribute grad
goodies and take orders during lunch.  If you have not ordered your grad
goodies please come Friday at lunch.

2.  Attention BHS Seniors:  Peter Thomas Hair salon is offering $40 Prom
specials to BHS students.  Call and book an appointment now.  Make-up
services available too.  Call 843-0697 for more information.  Location (1700
Shattuck Ave, Berkeley)

*3.  NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR COLLEGE CHOICES?  Your college advisor has a list
of schools that are still accepting applications.  

*4.  STUDENTS PLANNING TO ATTEND A UC CAMPUS - If you are planning to attend
a UC campus, you must take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam on
Saturday, May 9 unless you meet one of the following criteria:  30 or better
on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or 680 or better on the SAT-II
Writing Test; or 680 or better on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section;
or 3, 4 or 5 on either Advanced Placement (AP) Examination in English; or
completing with a C or better an acceptable college course in English
composition (for example, English 1A at a community college). The test will
be offered at Berkeley High School.  You do not need to register to take the
test.


SCHOLARSHIPS

*1.  Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and
Universities (HACU) open travel program for college students - Dandole Alas
a Tu Exito/Giving Flight to Your Success.  A panel of judges comprised of
college professors and education advocates from coast to coast will gather
in the summer to select the students who will receive free travel to their
colleges and universities.  Each student is eligible to receive from one to
four tickets that the student or an immediate family member can use in the
Fall 2009 to travel to/from a college or university.  The travel tickets are
awarded to undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students with socio-economic
need who journey away from home to pursue higher education.  Essay required.

*2.  Fullwood Scholarship - Open to seniors who are planning to attend UC
Berkeley next year.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 14.

*3.  Bay Area Gardeners Foundation - Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of
2.5 who have financial need who are willing to do 20 hours or more of
community service each semester and who live in one of the 9 Bay Area
counties.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 17.  

*4.  Check Center Scholarship - Open to graduating senior from Berkeley High
School with a minimum 2.5 GPA who will attend a vocational/training school,
2 year or 4 year college or university in the fall.  Two scholarships of
$500 each will be awarded.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May
11.

*5.  Los Hermanos de Stanford - Open to outstanding Latino seniors who plan
to attend a two or four year college in the fall and has financial need.
Students are NOT REQUIRED to attend Stanford.  Two $800 scholarships will be
awarded Applications available at

Deadline: May 15.

*6.  LAHF Dise/Gardere/Smith Scholarship Fund -Open to any low-income high
school senior going to college fall 2009.  There will be two scholarships
awarded $1,000 each. Deadline: May 15. Applications available in D221.


SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS 

*1.  Cal Trans is sponsoring a two-week Summer Engineering Institute at San
Francisco State from July 19-31.  Cost - FREE.  Students live on campus to
explore engineering.  For more information, go to

available in D221.  Deadline:  May 22.  


EVENTS/PERFORMANCES

1.  Senior prom tickets are $95.  Buy your tickets in D173.  Guest passes
are available in D148.  Prom is May 9, 2009 at the Westin Hotel at 50 Third
Street in San Francisco, between Market and Mission.  This is not the Westin
at Union Square that was previously stated in the Senior letter.

2.  Want to be part of one of Broadway's biggest hits?  YMTC announces
auditions for its fall production of A CHORUS LINE.  Calling all dancers,
singers, and actors.  Auditions (by appointment) May 11 - 13. For more
