SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  NOVEL -- new and inventive.  Students try to invent novel excuses for not doing their homework, but teachers rarely get to hear anything that is truly new.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

World Affairs Council Summer Institute on International Affairs -- The 2009 Summer Institute will meet once a week from 3-7 PM beginning the week of June 15 through the week of August 3. Students prepare by completing assigned readings and writing assignments, then meet to discuss the evening’s topic and depending on the schedule, may meet with that day's speaker. Following this discussion, students join Council members to attend a public lecture. Participants must commit to attending all meetings. Upon successful completion, students will receive a one-year membership to the World Affairs Council enabling them to attend programs. Summer Institute speakers include: General David Petraeus, Commander of US Central Command, Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox, and Michael Pollan, Author, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.  For more information, contact the Schools Program Officer at
