STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
April 15, 2009           

ADMINISTRATION

1.  Today, April 15 is Late Start Day for the month of April.  

*2.  Free tutoring available for all levels, Tuesday and Thursday in C105.

*3.  Join the Public Library's downtown Teen Book Club.  Discuss your favorite books! Chat with other teens who like to read!  Eat yummy snacks! The first meeting is Thursday, April 16th.

*4.  The Honors testing dates for placement into Honors Algebra 2 and Honors Math Analysis for next year are: Thursday, April 16 (3:30-5:30), Friday, April 17 (3:30-5:30) and Monday, April 20 (3:30-5:30).  Contact Amy Burke at amy_burke at berkeley.k12.ca.us.

*5.  Congrats to BHS Jazz Ensemble and Combo who were participants in the 39th Annual Monterey National High School Jazz Competition on April 9-16. The Combo won the combo division.

CLUBS

* Earphone English Club -- The book "Twilight" is getting more interesting. So come by and listen to Twilight in C124 today at lunch. Don't hesitate.

SPORTS

Judo International at BHS will be starting on Thursday, April 16 at 3:45 pm in the Wrestling Room.  Come learn the world's most popular martial art from a Brazilian and an American national champion. Learn Portuguese and how to write your name in Japanese, while you learn how throw someone twice
your size. Please come in sweats or shorts or just show up to watch.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

*1.  ST. MARY’S COLLEGE FAIR – Saturday, April 25, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm.  Come to the St. Mary's College Fair to get information from over 150 college representatives from around the country.  Workshops on admissions and financial aid in English and Spanish are also available.  Free shuttles are available every 15 minutes beginning at 12:30 pm from the Orinda BART station. 2.  Project WHAT – Part/time jobs for teenagers and young adults, ages 15-24, who have had a parent in prison or jail, to increase awareness of what it's like to have had a parent in prison or jail and to improve services for youth with incarcerated parents.  The job entails working with a writing instructor to write a true story based on your personal experience, speak publicly at conferences about your experience, and facilitate trainings for adults and youth.  $8/hour for summer training + $100 bonus at the end of the summer.  $10-$12/hour for weekly meetings during the school year, plus fees for presenting at conferences or training.  Applications and more information available in D221.  Deadline:
April 23.

FOR JUNIORS

*1.  SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- May 5 is the regular registration deadline for the June 6 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 8 is the regular registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  These are the last tests offered before September 2009.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.

2.  Nordstrom's Scholarship – open to Juniors who have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.7;  have made a substantial contribution to the community; are involved in school activities; require financial assistance to attend college and will be eligible to attend a four-year college or university in the U.S.  Deadline:  June 1.  Award:  $10,000 scholarship paid over four years at $2,500 per year.  Applications available in D221.

FOR SENIORS

*1.  FRESNO STATE – Are you planning on attending Fresno State or were admitted and have questions about the school? Come to a meeting on Thursday, April 23 at 10:35 in the College/Career Center to speak with an admissions representative from the school.  Sign up in advance in D221 to attend.

2.  NEED HELP UNDERSTANDING AND/OR COMPARING YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARD LETTERS? Come to a workshop to discuss these issues.  Bring your award letters. Sign up in D221 to attend. Wednesday, April 15, 3:30 pm in Conference Room A.  Thursday, April 16, 7:30 am in the College/Career Center.

EVENTS

1.  Senior prom tickets are $65.  Buy your tickets in D173.  Guest passes are available in D148.

2.  MORP has been postponed to April 24, 2009.
