STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
March 17, 2009           

ADMINISTRATION

1.  Attention Students and Staff:  All lost and found items will be
held until Spring Break, March 31st.  All remaining items after March
31, 2009 will be donated.  Please come and check for lost items
especially backpacks.  A watch was found in the staff parking lot.  If
you lost one please check with Parent Resource Center room D224 -- you
must describe it!

2.  RISE will have an all you can eat crab fundraiser on March 27th
from 6pm to 8 pm.  Please help support our students. Tickets on sale
in room G111.  Teachers please post flyers in your room.  Thanks.


CLUBS

1.  Cheerleaders:  Those of you who are still interested in becoming a
Yellowjacket cheerleader for 2009-2010.  You can pick up an
application from the Athletic Office.  New tryout dates are March 16,
17 and 18.  For more information contact Nichelle at 510-776-8194.

2.  Are you a longboarder looking to spread the stake, or shred the
gnar? Come to  Mr. Rogers' Room C224 Wednesdays at lunch to meet other
longboarders and arrange events.  The longboard club is open to
boarders of all skill levels.

3.  Join the cooking club Wednesday, March 18th in H106 at 3:30pm.  We
will be making an Irish Feast featuring the classic Irish dish,
colcannon, Irish stew, green salad, green punch and Irish potatoes.
Come check it
out!  Free food, friends and fun!

4.  Are you funny?  The Jacket's  April Fools issue is coming up and
we need you. Submissions are open to all BHS students from all grades,
schools, and programs.  All articles will be published under
pseudonyms. Stories are due March 20.

5.  Chorus Club: Rehearsals are now LUNCHTIMES ONLY - MONDAY AND
TUESDAY, both in the Band Room, A201 (to reduce time conflicts).  We
have a CONCERT coming up on Sunday March 29 (12-3pm) in the Community
Theater -- let your family and friends know.  Tickets are free.  The
Chorus will be singing alone and also in a combined choir with younger
kids.  The combined song is "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder--if you don't
know it you can listen online and get familiar with the melody and
lyrics.  There are TWO extra pre-concert REHEARSALS - one Thursday,
March 26th at 4:30 pm in the Band room, and the other on Saturday,
March 28th in the Community Theater.  Please also sign up with
Trelawny if you are interested in some SPECIAL WEDNESDAY LUNCH
SESSIONS for beginning/intermediate singers on music reading and
rhythm, or for advanced singers for small ensemble singing.  Also, the
next club organizing MEETING is Thursday March 26 at 5:30pm. Any

JOB OPPORTUNITY

Looking for a student to help with landscaping and light construction
at my home, Monday and Thursday afternoons.  Can be a guy or a girl,
but must be strong enough to carry 50-lb bags of concrete up our front
stairs, and able to dig and do other physical tasks.  Chance to learn
some construction skills. Pay $9.00 per hour. Hours can be flexible.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

*1.  Project WHAT - Part/time jobs for teenagers and young adults,
ages 15-24, who have had a parent in prison or jail, to increase
awareness of what it's like to have had a parent in prison or jail and
to improve services for youth with incarcerated parents.  The job
entails working with a writing instructor to write a true story based
on your personal experience, speak publicly at conferences about your
experience, and facilitate trainings for adults and youth.  $8/hour
for summer training + $100 bonus at the end of the summer.
$10-$12/hour for weekly meetings during the school year, plus fees for
presenting at conferences or training.  Applications and more
information available in D221.  Deadline: April 23.  

SENIORS

*1.  STUDENTS ADMITTED TO UC MERCED [date corrected] - Wednesday,
March 18, 12:20 pm in the College/Career Center.  Come to a meeting
with an admissions officer to get all of your questions answered about
the campus.  Sign up in D221 to attend.


JUNIORS

*1.  Are you interested in serving in the US House of Representatives
as a page?  If you are at least 16 years old and have a 3.0 GPA in
core academic subjects, you may apply for a fall or spring
appointment.  There is no GPA requirement for pages who work during
the summer.  Pages live in the Page Residence Hall in Washington, DC
and attend classes at the Page Residence Hall.  Pages must be
sponsored by a member of Congress.  For

*2.  Questbridge College Prep Scholarship - Open to high achieving,
low income juniors (annual household income under $60,000), apply for
full scholarships to summer school programs on college campuses,
individualized college admissions counseling admissions conferences at
Stanford or Yale, and all expense paid visits to college campuses.
Apply at [ http://www.questbridge.com ].  Deadline:  March 31.  

*3.  SAT/ACT TEST DATES - March 31 is the regular registration
deadline for the May 2 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 8 is the regular
registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  Fee waivers for low income
students are available in D221. 

4.  Students Rising Above - Open to juniors from a low income family
who have overcome obstacles that are not of their own making, have a
GPA of 3.0 or above, live in the Bay Area and are planning on
attending a four year college.  The scholarship covers all college
expenses not covered by other scholarships or financial aid.  In
addition, students are given assistance in applying to college, help
with dental and healthcare appointments, summer internships, and a
mentor.  Applications are available in D221 and at
http://studentsrisingabove.org/student-scholarships .  Deadline:
April 4.

5.  Nordstrom's Scholarship - Open to juniors who have a minimum
cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.7;  have made a substantial
contribution to the community; are involved in school activities;
require financial assistance to attend college and will be eligible to
attend a four-year college or university in the U.S.  Deadline:  June
1.  Award:  $10,000 scholarship paid over four years at $2,500 per
year.  Applications available in D221.

SOPHOMORES/JUNIORS

Summer Engineering Seminar - This FREE summer program on the Santa
Clara University campus in San Jose is geared toward current high
school sophomores and juniors who have an interest in science, math
and engineering.  Students stay on campus and take specially designed
courses including lectures, interactive activities and labs.
Applications available at

2-6 and August 9-13.  Deadline:  March 20.  

EVENTS

1.  Class of 2010, Jr. Prom royalty is looking for you!  Do you want
to be Jr. Prom King or Queen?  Come by D148 for more details.

2.  WANT TO BE PART OF ONE OF BROADWAY'S BIGGEST HITS?  YMTC announces
auditions for its summer production of LES MISERABLES.  Fabulous
music, wonderful story, lots of principal roles, big singing ensemble.
