SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DELUGE -- a flood or overwhelming situation.  After winning the lottery, I received a deluge of phone calls from old friends and long lost relatives.  

FOR ALL STUDENTS 
African American Education Summit at Cal State East Bay -- Saturday, February 21, 8:00 am to 12:15 pm in the University gymnasium, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward, CA.  The FREE summit is open to the public. Parents, high school and junior high school students, school administrators, teachers, counselors, and business and community leaders are encouraged to attend. Topics covered in the workshops and panels will include college admission information and Cal State East Bay application assistance; financial aid and scholarship information. A light continental breakfast will be provided.  Cal State East Bay On-the-Spot Admission for CSU eligible high school seniors. SUMMER PROGRAMS

COSMOS -- CA State Summer School for Mathematics and Science.  Programs offered at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Diego.  COSMOS is a four-week residential program for talented and motivated students completing grades eight through twelve. Students work side-by-side with outstanding university researchers and faculty exploring advanced topics that extend beyond the typical high school curriculum. COSMOS courses are hands-on and lab intensive emphasizing current research underway at the University of California. Most students have a GPA of 3.5 or above.  Students may only apply to one campus, but may apply to more than one cluster at that campus.  Application deadline:  March 15.  Applications are available at http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos/.  

Sophomore and Juniors -- UC Berkeley High School Biotech Training Program offers an 8 week internship program for students interested in learning about biotechnology.  Students are paid a stipend of $2,500.  The program is open to current sophomores and juniors who are US citizens or permanent residents from low income families and/or a family with little or no history of attending college.  Students must have an interest in science, technology or medicine and be ready to work hard.  Applications are available in D221.  Deadline:  March 2.  

Academic Talent Development Program at UC Berkeley -- Open to students currently in grades 7-11.  This is 6-week session (June 22-July 31) of challenging and stimulating classes is designed for both acceleration and enrichment.  Courses are available in a wide variety of subjects.  Financial aid is available (application deadline March 4). Application deadline is March 4 for new students and February 18 for returning students. UC Davis Young Scholar Program -- This program offers summer research opportunities in the biological and natural sciences for 40 current sophomores and juniors.  Students live in the dorm from June 21-August 1 and work closely with university research faculty on individual projects.  For more information and application, go to http://ysp.ucdavis.edu .  Fee reductions are available for students based on need.  Application deadline:  March 31.  

FOR SENIORS
CAL GRANTS -- Cal Grants are free money from the state of California based on the student’s GPA and family income. The money may be used at any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy -- just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2 (we recommend completing it by February 15) listing a California college to receive the information and fill out the Cal Grant Information Release Form.  These forms are available in D173 and D221 and were distributed to all English classes.  This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete.  DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 12.  

Did you apply to Sacramento State?  Come to a meeting on Tuesday, February 10 at 9:30 (second period) in the College/Career Center to speak with their admissions officer and get all of your questions answered about the college, the status of your application, assessment testing, orientation and more.  Sign up in D221 to attend.

IT'S TIME TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID -- Sign up to attend one of the workshops on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Prior to the workshop, pick up a FAFSA On the Web Worksheet in the College/Career Center or download one at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws90bw.pdf  and fill it out as much as you can.  You can estimate numbers if necessary.  YOU MUST SIGN UP IN ADVANCE TO ATTEND BECAUSE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF COMPUTERS.  All workshops will be held in the BHS library.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 6:30 PM - CASH FOR COLLEGE.  If at least 25 students or parents attend, one student will win a $1,000 scholarship.  If at least 75 attend, two students will win scholarships.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- February 10 is the regular registration deadline for the March 14 SAT.  February 27 is the regular registration deadline for the April 4 ACT. These are the first rests  recommended for juniors.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  

SCHOLARSHIPS

*Northern California Golf Association -- Open to seniors who plan on attending a four year college or university in the fall and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.  An interest in golf is encouraged but not mandatory.  Scholarship:  $5,000.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  March 20.  

New American College Fund -- Open to foreign-born graduating seniors planning to enroll in a two or four year college in fall 2009 who have financial need, have lived in California for three or more years during high school, have community or extracurricular involvement and have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.3. US Citizenship or permanent residency is NOT required.   Scholarships of up to $5,000.  Applications available in D221 and at http://www.e4fc.org/ . Deadline:  February 16.

Morris and Juliet James Achievement Award -- Open to Berkeley High seniors who have spent most of their school age years in the Berkeley Unified School District.  Awards will be based on hobbies, community service, home responsibilities, work experience, career goals, extracurricular activities and leadership experience.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  March 6.  

Delta Sigma Theta Berkeley Chapter -- Open to African American seniors in Alameda County who are planning to attend a four year college.  Students planning to attend a community college due to financial need will also be considered.  Awards based on GPA, leadership ability, potential for success, financial need and demonstrated commitment to community/school service.  Amount of award will vary according to the need of the student.  Deadline:  March 1.  Applications available in D221.

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation -- Open to a graduating senior who is the child of a current or former Marine (some scholarships are available for grandchildren of Marines) with a maximum family adjusted gross income of $80,000 and a minimum GPA of 2.0.  Applications available in D221 and at www.mcsf.org . Scholarships range from $1,000 to $12,500.  Deadline:  March 1.

Bay Area Council Scholarship Program -- Open to current high school seniors who reside in underserved neighborhood within the nine-county Bay Area who plan to enroll in and attend a full-time undergraduate course of study as a freshman at one of the following Bay Area schools may apply: Mills, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis or University of San Francisco. Financial need will be considered in determining the amount of each award. Potential recipients who receive other large scholarships and cannot demonstrate financial need will be ineligible.  Awards range from $5,000 to $10,000.  Applications available in D221 and at http://www.bayareafamilyoffunds.org/programs/scholarship.shtml .  Deadline:  March 23.

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award Program -- Open to all senior athletes.  25 scholarships of $7,500 each will be awarded based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and milk experience.  Applications accepted only online at bodybymilk.com.  Deadline:  March 6.  

Association of Equipment Management Professionals Scholarships -- Open to graduating seniors interested in enrolling in a school offering a two year, diesel technician program.  Numerous scholarships up to $2,000 will be awarded.  Applications and more information available in D221 or at http://www.aemp.org/pdfs/AEMP_Found_brochure_FP.pdf.  Deadline:  May 1.

Epilepsy Scholarship Award -- Open to high school seniors and college students who are under a doctor’s care for epilepsy. Applicants must first register at www.epilepsy-scholarship.com and then fill out the application. Applications are available in D221.  For more information, call 1-800-292-7373 or go to the above website. 25 scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded. Deadline:  May 1.

Hispanic Employee Association of PG&E -- Open to seniors or current college students of any ethnicity who live in a PG&E service area.  Scholarships range from $500-$1,500.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline: February 27.
