STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

ADMINISTRATION

*1.  Freshman Day is today.  Baked goods will be sold.  There will be a DJ, fun and food.

2.  On Wednesday January 28, 2009 the Neff Company will be here to place letterman jacket orders during lunch. See Mr. O in the Athletic Office to pick up an order form and ask any questions.

3.  BSEP Applications are now available for pick-up.  Apply for a BSEP grant for the 2009-2010 school year.  Deadline for the applications will be February 27, 2009.  Applications are available at the front desk with Belinda McDaniel.  You may also request an online copy.

4.  New to BHS or did you lose your BHS Organizer?  Need an extra? There are a bunch of 08-09 organizers at the front office. Go to the volunteer desk in the main office to pick one up.  The cost is $3.

5.  Yearbooks on sale in H102B.  Buy them soon they are selling out. Clubs -- get your yearbook page for $120 for full page.  Seniors -- don't miss out on senior pages.  Space is limited.

6.  Come kick it with some of the Bay Area's top Slam Poets, as they help you with writing, editing, memorizing, and performing your poems, just in time for you to BUST at the 2009 Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam. Thursdays at Berkeley High, Room C334 with former Teen Poetry Slam Champions Isaac Miller and Terry Taplin.  Starts Thursday, January 29th at 4pm.

CLUBS

1.  Are you interested in becoming a BHS spirit leader or BHS mascot? Well your chance has now come.  Attend the cheerleading information night along with a Parent or Guardian on Thursday, January 29th at 5:30 pm in the Jacket Gym.  At this meeting you will receive tryout packets and hear exciting information about the world of spirit leading at BHS. Go Yellow Jackets!

2. Tired of coughing up phlegm balls?  Tired of sewer breath?  Want to learn how to quit smoking for good?  Call Pauline Bondonno at BUSD Tobacco Prevention for an appointment.  You can also take a short survey for a $15 GIFT CERTIFICATE.  Call 644-6034.

*3.  Do you want to be an opinion and sports or entertainment columnist for the Jacket? Write two funny,incisive or otherwise fascinating sample columns (about 500 words each) and email them to Megan Winkleman at mwin3719 at sbcglobal.net before February 9th.

*4.  The French Club will host a bakesale today at lunch on the senior steps!  Stop by today and help support the French Club!

*5.  Mr. Angell's AP US History study group meets every Tuesday at lunch in C310. All are welcome!


SPORTS

*1.  Girls Lacrosse Info Meeting today during lunch at the metal bleachers. Coaches and captains will hand out important information about the upcoming season and tryouts that start on February 2nd. All skill levels are welcome, anyone interested should come to learn about the great sport of lacrosse! January 27th during lunch at the bleachers -- be there!

2.  Congratulations to the Boys Wrestling Team for taking 3rd Place at the Oakland Tech Varsity Invitational last weekend!  Individual medalists were: Senior Koji Jagust taking the Gold Medal at 145 pounds by winning 5 straight matches; 2nd Place finishers were Juniors Jasper Werby at 135 pounds and Malcom Moody at 152 pounds and Senior Joseph Nelson at 189 pounds. Freshman Dominic Francisco pulled out a 3rd place finish at 112 pounds. Good job boys!

3.  Congratulations goes to Juniors Miya Sommers and Aida Marin for placing at the Albany Girl's Wrestling Tournament last Saturday. Miya Sommers defended her title from last year as the Albany Tournament Champion by dominating all three of her opponents and Aida Marin wrestled 3 tough matches to place 2nd. Way to go Girls!

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

1.  King Middle School's After school ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 2:15-3:15pm on Wednesdays. We also hire monolingual English speaking tutors who love kids and can patiently work with middle school students.  You must be good in pre-algebra, algebra and/or science, and writing and reading assignments for English and history classes.  You must be in 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King on time!  Pay $9.00/hour.  Come by the Science Building, Room 7 and ask for Ms. Rathwell or Ms. Hamai, or call 644-4811.

2.  The Teen Center Task Force of the YMCA is a leadership group responsible for creating the new Teen Center in downtown Berkeley. The Task Force is looking for teens who want to make a difference and help design and oversee the construction of the new Teen Center. Applicants must be at least 15 years old by February 1, 2009. SUMMER PROGRAMS

1.  Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program -- an 8 week research program at Stanford for students graduating from high school in 2009 and 2010.  Program dates:  June 15-August 7. Application deadline: February 2. For more information and to apply, go to http://simr.stanford.edu.

2.  Summer Math & Science Honors Academy (SMASH) Information Night -- Thursday, January 29, 6:30 pm at the Level Playing Field Institute, 543 Howard St., 5th Floor, SF.  RSVP is required at 415-946-3033 or shannon at lpfi.org by January 21.  Space is limited.  Find out more about SMASH, a three-year academic enrichment program held each summer for six weeks on the UC Berkeley campus. The program assists high-achieving high school students of color from underrepresented populations to become competitive and successful in science, technology, math and engineering studies at competitive colleges and universities. 3.  Applications for Youth Spirit Artworks' stipend summer intensive arts training program for youth are available to download from our website and can also be picked up at our office, 1769 Alcatraz Avenue, during art studio hours Monday through Friday 3pm to 6pm.

4.  Sophomore and Juniors – UC Berkeley High School Biotech Training Program offers an 8 week internship program for students interested in learning about biotechnology.  Students are paid a stipend of $2,500.  The program is open to current sophomores and juniors who are US citizens or permanent residents from low income families and/or a family with little or no history of attending college.  Students must have an interest in science, technology or medicine and be ready to work hard.  Applications are available in D221.  Deadline:  March 2. 

FOR JUNIORS

SCHOLARSHIP FOR SAT/ACT PREP -- East Bay Community Scholarship Fund is offering a scholarship to pay for an SAT/ACT Prep Course for low income students living in Alameda or Contra Costa counties. Applications are available in D221. Deadline:  January 31, 2009.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS - Discover Card Tribune Award Program -- Students with a minimum cumulative GPA for 9th and 10th grades of 2.75, who demonstrated leadership, are actively contributing to their communities and have experienced and overcome a significant obstacle are eligible. Apply at https://www.applyists.net/.  Use access code DISC.  Postmark deadline:  January 31. More information available in the College/Career Center.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – February 10 is the regular registration deadline for the March 14 SAT.  February 27 is the regular registration deadline for the April 4 ACT. These are the first tests recommended for juniors.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.

FOR SENIORS

IT'S TIME TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID -- Sign up to attend one of the workshops on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Prior to the workshop, pick up a FAFSA On the Web worksheet in the College/Career Center or download one at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws90bw.pdf and fill it out as much as you can.  You can estimate numbers if necessary.  YOU MUST SIGN UP IN ADVANCE TO ATTEND BECAUSE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF COMPUTERS.  All workshops will be held in the BHS library.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

Princeton Prize in Race Relations - Princeton is sponsoring an awards program for high school students to recognize, support and encourage young people who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of relations among the races.  Cash awards of up to $1,000 will be awarded.   The deadline is January 31.  For more information, an application and examples of previous winners, go to http://www.princeton.edu/PrincetonPrize   


SCHOLARSHIPS

2.  Scholarships available for student speakers: The Berkeley Lions Club is conducting its annual Student Speakers Contest this month. All participants receive $25.  The winner receives $50 and advances to the next round.  The contest will be held on Thursday, January 29 at the Lions regular meeting from 11:45 am to 1:30 pm. EVENTS/PERFORMANCES

1.  Spring Musical!!  Want to make history?  Be in the BHS Spring Musical, "Double Digits" an original musical written by BHS students. Auditions are Tuesday, January 27th and Wednesday, January 28th in A203, the drama room.  All you have to do is sing a song, in any style you want.  If you would like, you can read a monologue in addition. Sign up at the drama call board on the middle floor of the A building.

2.  All juniors interested in fashion this is your event, Thursday, January 29th.  The junior class will be hosting a Fashion Show where winners can win TWO FREE Jr Prom Tickets!  All participants must use Jr Spirit pack gear as part of their outfits.  But the creativity is limitless.  Any questions?  See the leadership students, or Edith Jordan.
