STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
January 8, 2009

*New to the bulletin today

ADMINISTRATION

1.  The next late start day is Wednesday, January 14, 2009.  Please mark your calendars.

*2.  Finals are coming up January 21, 22, and 23rd.  You can come prepared by attending the teacher tutorials which are offered almost everyday in most subjects.  Ask a teacher for the schedule or pick one up at the front desk.  Consult your incredibly informative BHS daily planner for details on finals and formulas.

*3.  Berkeley City College is offering an opportunity to Berkeley High students interested in computer animation.  This exciting course will be held for 9 meetings on Saturday mornings.  See Mr. Prolo in H202A for applications and more info.  Spaces are very limited, and applications are due on Jan 16, so don't delay.

*4.  Come kick it with some of the Bay Area's top Slam Poets, as they help you with writing, editing, memorizing, and performing your poems, just in time for you to BUST at the 2009 Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam. Thursdays at Berkeley High School Room C334 with former Teen Poetry Slam Champions Isaac Miller and Terry Taplin.  Starts Thursday, January 29 at 4pm.

2.  Girls Softball conditioning: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday starting January 13 through January 30.  Tryouts begin Monday, February 2.  Girls should wear workout attire and athletic shoes.

*3.  Berkeley High wrestlers competed in 3 tournaments over the winter break and brought home 5 medals! At the Castro Valley Girl's Invitational, Junior Miya Sommers placed 3rd and Junior Aida Marin placed 4th. At the SPSV Crossface Classic JV Tournament Sophomore Carter Tong dominated his opponents and went 3-0 to take the gold medal. Senior Joseph Nelson placed 1st and Sophomore Ben Cerami had 3 pins to place 3rd. Way to go wrestlers!!

*4.  Spring sports tryouts begin February 2, 2009.  That is less than one month away.  If you plan on trying out for a spring sport please pick up a sports packet from the athletic office, schedule a physical and complete the packet.  All packets are due by Feb. 2.  You can't try out if your packet is incomplete.  If you need assistance, see Mr. Olushegun, the Athletic Director.


JOB OPPORTUNITY

*The Teen Center Task Force of the YMCA is a leadership group responsible for creating the new Teen Center in downtown Berkeley.  The Task Force is looking for teens who want to make a difference and help design and oversee the construction of the new Teen Center.  Applicants must be at least 15 years old by February 1, 2009. SUMMER PROGRAMS

*1.  Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program -- an 8 week research program at Stanford for students graduating from high school in 2009 and 2010.  Program dates:  June 15-August 7.  Application deadline: February 2.  For more information and to apply, go to http://simr.stanford.edu.

*2.  Summer Math & Science Honors Academy (SMASH) Information Night -- Thursday, January 29, 6:30 pm at the Level Playing Field Institute, 543 Howard St., 5th Floor, SF.  RSVP is required at 415-946-3033 or shannon at lpfi.org by January 21.  Space is limited.  Find out more about SMASH, a three-year academic enrichment program held each summer for six weeks on the UC Berkeley campus.  The program assists high-achieving high school students of color from underrepresented populations to become competitive and successful in science, technology, math and engineering studies at competitive colleges and universities. *3.  Latino Education Summer at Cal State East Bay -- Saturday, January 24, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The FREE summit is open to the public. Parents, high school and junior high school students, school administrators, teachers, counselors, and business and community leaders are encouraged to attend.  Topics covered in the workshops and panels (in English and Spanish) will include college information resources; student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and financing a college education through grants, scholarships, and financial aid. Also, on-the-spot admission will be available for Cal State East Bay eligible high school seniors who have submitted an application through the CSU Mentor program and provided transcripts to the university by Jan. 10. FOR JUNIORS

SCHOLARSHIP FOR SAT/ACT PREP -- East Bay Community Scholarship Fund is offering a scholarship to pay for an SAT/ACT Prep Course for low income students living in Alameda or Contra Costa counties.  Applications are available in D221.  Deadline:  January 31, 2009.

FOR SENIORS

*1.  If you applied to any colleges which require your first semester grades, Mid-Year Report Forms are due to Ms. Mellion in D173 no later than January 15.  Turn in the Mid-Year Report Form that is part of the college's application along with a Transcript Request Form with "Mid-Year Report" written across the top and a stamped envelope (4 1/8 x 9 1/2" with one 42 cent stamp) addressed to the office of admissions of the college with a return address of Berkeley High School, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA  94704. The UC's do not require a mid-year report.

*2.  The financial aid booklet "Fund Your Future" is now available.  Stop by the College/Career Center to pick up your copy and get important information on the ins and outs of financial aid, Cal Grant, and other state and federal aid programs.

*3.  SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- January 9 (for online registrations) is the late registration deadline for the January 24 SAT test. January 16 is the late registration deadline for the February 7 ACT. Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  For seniors, some colleges will accept test scores from these tests as part of the application process. Don't forget to list the colleges you want to receive these scores on your registration form.

SCHOLARSHIPS

*2.  Murry Jacobs Scholarship, sponsored by Chevron's Black History Awareness Committee -- open to Seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who are planning to attend a two or four year college or university, demonstrate leadership ability, are involved in community or extracurricular activities and are US citizens or legal residents.  Scholarships range from $2,000 to $3,500.  Deadline:  January 9. Applications available in D221. 

PERFORMANCE

Dance Production 2009 is this weekend and next!  Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8pm, box office opens at 7.  Prices are $5 students, $12 adults. This show features student-choreographed dances.  BHS musicians, and tasty refreshments.
