1. A number of sharp eyed readers have noticed that the timeline for
incoming freshmen is different this year than in the past. Last year
students coming from private schools were asked to register with the
district sometime in March and then sign up for classes in April. Those
dates pushed the lottery and drawing up the master schedule into May and
June--too late for any significant fiddling and corrections. THIS year the
administration is hoping to run the lottery by early March. In order to do
so, all dates must be pushed forward. However, because this is the first
time we are running this new timeline, there are still a few kinks in the
system--mainly the district Admissions Office has not yet set a new time
for registration for incoming 9th graders from private school. That is, if
you call today, you will be told to come register in March. We are counting
on having a new registration timeline available by Tuesday, January 13,
our most important Information Night. (Eight graders coming from one of our
feeder schools do not have to register.)

2. Information Night, January 13 at 7 p.m. in the Community Theater.
All 8th grade students and their parents/guardians from both private and one
of the Berkeley High feeder schools (King, Longfellow, and Willard) should
plan on attending this meeting which is the essential first step in the
process of signing up for classes for the class of 2013. Following Jan.
13, there are three evening meetings for parents whose children are
currently enrolled in the BUSD feeder schools and three evenings for
parents and students who are coming to Berkeley High from private schools.

Please note:
a) the first time I announced the date Information Night I said it was on
the 15th of January. That date is incorrect. The correct date is Tuesday,
January 13. Please pass this information on to any 8th grade neighbors and
friends that you might know.
b) Parking is very difficult AND the event will start promptly.

On January 13, all six small learning communities will give an overview of
their program in the Community Theater. In addition, students and parents
will have an opportunity to attend presentations from our various
departments (Math, PE, World Languages, Science), our academic support
programs, and the numerous athletic and club choices available to students.
Again, please be aware that parking is very difficult and the event will
start promptly.
