SAT WORD OF THE DAY: CONCEDE -- to surrender; give in.  Minutes after the polls closed on the West Coast, John McCain conceded that he had lost the presidential election to Barack Obama.  

FOR ALL STUDENTS
College Fair -- Wednesday, November 19, 3:00-7:00 pm, at Youth Uprising, 8711 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland.  Includes representatives from many local four and two year colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, programs in beauty/barber school, design industry, automotive tech and more as well as workshops on financial aid, test prep and college applications. World Affairs Council is sponsoring the International Career Mentor Night on Thursday, November 20, 6:00-8:00 pm.  This is an opportunity to speak with Bay Area professionals in international development, journalism, foreign service, education, law, business and global health.  Space is limited.  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Want to study abroad? Youth for Understanding and World Affairs Council awards annual scholarships to high school students (only) who want to study abroad for the summer, semester or year. Come to this information session to learn more about the 2009-2010 YFU study abroad programs and meet former Council scholarship winners. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 6:00 PM. Violet Richardson Award of the Soroptimist Club -- Award of $1,000 to a young woman currently between the ages of 14 and 17 who has demonstrated initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it and who has had significant and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer.  Application available in D221.  Received deadline:  December 1.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
MIT Women’s Technology Program -- A rigorous four week academic and residential experience at MIT for current female juniors, offering the opportunity to explore engineering through hands-on classes, labs and team-based projects. Students may choose electrical engineering and computer science or mechanical engineering.  Application deadline:  January 15.  For more information, go to http://wtp.mit.edu.  

FOR SENIORS
DID YOU MISS THE FINANCIAL AID PART 1 WORKSHOP ON OCTOBER 16?  The DVD’s of the event are now available. DVD’s of the event are now available to borrow for up to two nights.  Contact Ms. Breiter at firecat_breiter at berkeley.k12.ca.us to borrow the DVD.  

DID YOU TURN IN YOUR ENVELOPES SO THAT WE CAN MAIL YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS TO SCHOOLS REQUIRING A COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION?   They were due last Friday.  If you haven’t turned them in to D221, do so IMMEDIATELY.  These are NOT needed by the UC’s and Cal States. You will need:
1. A signed Transcript Request Form (available in D173 and in the College/Career Center) for each school.  If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must sign it. 
2. Secondary School Report form for each school (this comes with your college application).  These may also be called the Counselor Recommendation form or the School Report form.  
3. Large envelope (9 x 12 inches) addressed to each school with Berkeley High School as the return address.  Put 3 stamps on the envelope.($1.17)
4. Clip the forms for each school to the outside of each envelope.
5. Clip all of the above for all of the schools together with the College Application Checklist (purple form, available in the College/Career Center) on the front.

COMPLETE YOUR UC AND CAL STATE APPLICATIONS NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 30! Both the UC application (www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply) and the Cal State application (www.csumentor.edu) are available online. 
THE FOLLOWING CAL STATE CAMPUSES WILL CLOSE APPLICATIONS ON NOVEMBER 30:  CAL POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO, CAL POLY POMONA, CHANNEL ISLANDS, CHICO, FULLERTON, HUMBOLDT, LONG BEACH, NORTHRIDGE, SAN MARCOS, SAN DIEGO STATE, SAN JOSE AND SONOMA STATE.  SAN FRANCISCO STATE ADVISES THAT THEY MAY CLOSE APPLICATIONS ON NOVEMBER 30!  Other Cal State campuses may close applications on November 30 or shortly thereafter as well, so consider this to be the final deadline.  Check the schedule in D221 for workshops on completing these applications. The schedule is available on both the Daily Bulletin and the College Advisor’s Bulletin, as well as on the College Advisor’s website. Both college advisors are also available to review your applications before they are submitted, but will need a day or two of turn-around time, so don’t wait until the last minute.

ESSAY READERS -- Get feedback on your draft of your college essay/personal statement from experienced essay readers.  Readers will be available every day at 8:00-9:00 am, lunchtime and after school, 2:30-4:00 (except Friday after school).  First come, first served.

COLLEGE VISITS
Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High’s College/Career Center every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the permission of the teacher whose class they are missing.  Sign up in advance in the College/Career Center and pick up a permission slip. SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- November 19 (note new date) is the late registration deadline for the December 6 SAT and SAT subject tests. November 20 is the late registration deadline for the December 13 ACT. THESE ARE THE LAST TESTS ACCEPTED BY ALL UC CAMPUSES AND MANY CAL STATE CAMPUSES.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  

SCHOLARSHIPS

Elks National Foundation -- 500 four-year scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who are US citizens, based on scholarship, leadership and financial need.  Scholarships range from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year.  Applications are available at www.elks.org/enf/scholars .  Received deadline:  January 9, 5:00 pm.  Mail to: BPO Elks, Lodge 1816, 1475 Creekside Dr., Walnut Creek, CA  94596.  

San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club, Miss Teen Chinatown 2009 Scholarship --applicants must be between 14-18 years on April 11, 2009, be of Chinese descent and be able to write your own name in Chinese characters, minimum GPA of 3.0 for the prior school year.  $2,000 scholarship and round trip to Hong Kong.  Deadline:  December 15.  Applications available in D221.  

Ron Brown Scholarship -- Open to African-American or Black high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership ability, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need who are US citizens or permanent residents.  Up to 20 students will receive $10,000 per year for four years.  Deadline:  January 9.  Apply at www.ronbrown.org. 
 
Gates Millennium Scholars Program -- Open to African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents of the US, with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale who have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.  Deadline:  January 12, 2009. Applications available in D221 or at www.gmsp.org.
