[BHS etree] SPORTS: BHS Girls Basketball Coach Takes Leave of Absence

Due to personal reasons, second year Girls Basketball Coach, Cheryl
Draper, will be taking a leave of absence from coaching this season. 

Former Coach Gene Nakamura (Nak) will be the interim replacement. Many
in the community will remember that Coach Draper was an assistant to
Coach Nakamura until he retired after coaching the Girls Varsity team
for over 25 years.

According to Vice Principal Kristin Glenchur, "Cheryl was very
concerned about being away from the girls for the whole season, until
we were certain that Nak could fill in during her absence. We are all
happy to know that the team will be in good hands."

Mr. Nakamura, who also retired two years ago as the vice principal at
Longfellow Middle School (after serving in the Berkeley schools for 37
years) has enjoyed his retirement, but has remained active in the
District as a consultant by periodically taking on special
assignments.
