STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

*New to the bulletin today

ADMINISTRATION

*1.  Come sign up to donate blood on the Senior Steps next Tuesday, October 21st.  There will be a bake sale on that day too.  Every donor will receive a free baseball cap and a snack.  If you're 16, pick up a permission form in D148.  Don't miss your chance to save lives!

2.  Books with Bite at your library during Teen Read Week this week! Come into the Berkeley High Library and take a bite out of one of our special titles!  Pick up a copy of our list of Books with Bite!  Indulge your biting curiosity, check out a page-turner and read for the fun of it!

3.  BART tickets for October are in.  Please pick up your tickets by October 24th at lunchtime only in room D224.  All tickets not picked up by the 24th will become available for sale to the students.  The Parent Center no longer holds tickets beyond the stated pickup date.

4.  Yearbook Announcement: Senior baby pictures are due by October 31st with self-addressed envelopes in H102B 7th period.  Yearbooks are on sale in H102 or buy them on myyear.com.

5.  Who says you have to be a doctor to save a life?  Donate blood in a safe environment -- in school -- on October 24th in the Jacket Gym.  Go to www.BeADonor.com, and put in the sponsor code: Berkeley High to schedule an appointment.  Free baseball caps to donors!

6.  Are you interested in hosting an exchange student now or in the future? Then send a filled out profile to hostfamilies at gmx.de. You can download the profile at www.exchangeyear.net/hostfamilies.zip.

CLUBS

1.  Please join the cooking club today.  We meet in H106 at 3:30pm.  This week's menu is lasagna and salad.  Join your friends for cooking and fun, plus a free meal!

2.  Like to act?  Come to an informational meeting for all theater events in the 2008-2009 school year including Independent Theater Projects, Vagina Monologues and the BHS Spring Musical.  Only one day, today at lunch, in A203.  No experience needed.

3.  Do you want to help the community?  Club VIP is the club for you. Come to an informational meeting and be a part of a fun and educational environment, and help others less fortunate.  Come with ideas, and a positive attitude.  Today at lunch in the Library.

4.  Do you want to inform yourself about relationships?  Do you need help with Math, Science or any other class? Do you want to learn about what you need to get into college?  Come by the Help Club Thursdays at lunch in Room C105.  Snacks, help and tutoring hours provided.

5.  The BIHS students and staff are coming together today at 6 pm. in the Community Theater to honor Ms. Kalpna Mistry.  Please come join us.  Families are welcome.  It is a potluck event.  Contact Mr. Conn in G108B for details.


SPORTS

*1.  Berkeley High come out and support your undefeated Girls Volleyball team.  We have a game today, October 16 against De Anza in the Donahue Gym.  Admission is free!

2.  There will be an informational meeting for all girls interested in playing soccer on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 during lunch.  The meeting will be held on the bleachers by the football field.  All are invited to attend.

3.  All interested boys soccer players and parents are invited to the BHS Boys Soccer Social this Friday from 6 to 8 pm in the Food Court. Come meet the coaches, eat some great pasta and hear about the new boys soccer program.  All interested players should go online to www.futbolberkeley.com and sign up for tryouts!  Tryouts begin Monday, November 10, 2008.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

Stanford Splash - October 18, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, a one-day extravaganza of lectures, workshops, and seminars on fun topics for high school students. Stanford students and affiliates all volunteer to share their passions with you. You can choose as many or as few classes as you like. The fee is $20 for the entire day, no matter how many classes you take (fee waivers are available - email stanfordesp at gmail.com).

3.  SCHOLARSHIPS

Are you a male senior of African-American or Latino descent with an unweighted GPA of 3.3 or above from a low income family?  Apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship which provides a full scholarship to the college of your choice.  Workshop on filling out this application on Saturday, October 18, 9:00-1:00 pm at Cal State East Bay, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward.  Pre-register at www.csueastbay.edu/bridgebuilders. Continental breakfast and lunch provided.

USDA National Scholars Program -- This scholarship provides full tuition, room and board, employment, and more for 4 years to students pursuing a bachelor's degree at one of 18 HBCU campuses.  Students must major in any field of study in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or other related disciplines.  Students must be a US citizen, have a combined SAT total of 1,500 or above (using all 3 sections) or a composite ACT of 21 or above, and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.  Deadline:  February 1. Applications available in D221.


EVENTS

Were you a dancer in last year's shows?  If you want to buy a DVD of Dance Production, Choreographers or Dance Projects come see Ms. Carr at lunchtime this week in the A building.  DVD's are $5 each.
