College Advisor's Bulletin
Friday, October 10, 2008

SAT WORD OF THE DAY: CONSERVATIVE -- opposed to change. Some educators favor a complete overhaul of the nation’s school system, while others favor a more conservative approach.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
COLLEGE FAIR -- Saturday, October 11, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, UC Berkeley, Wheeler Hall. Over 60 public and college and university representatives will be available to speak with you. Pre-register online (not required, but helpful) at www.eastbayconsortium.org. For more information, call 510-238-9450.

Stanford Splash -- October 18, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, a one-day extravaganza of lectures, workshops, and seminars on fun topics for high school students. Stanford students and affiliates all volunteer to share their passions with you. You can choose as many or as few classes as you like. Sign up at www.stanfordesp.org -- online registration is NOW OPEN and ends October 15. A full course catalog is available at http://www.stanfordesp.org/learn/Splash/2008_Fall/catalog. The fee is $20 for the entire day, no matter how many classes you take (fee waivers are available by email at stanfordesp at gmail.com). See the FAQ at: http://www.stanfordesp.org/learn/splashfaq.html or email stanfordesp at gmail.com.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*UC Davis Preview Day -- Saturday, October 18, 7:30 am – 3:30 pm. This event allows students and their families to attend information sessions, tour the campus, check out the dorms and dining halls, talk with students and professors from the various academic colleges and departments. RSVP at admissions.ucdavis.edu/previewday.

FOR SENIORS
Both the UC application (www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply) and the Cal State application (www.csumentor.edu) are now available online. The deadline for the UC application is November 30. The priority deadline for the Cal State applications is also November 30. For many Cal State campuses, this will be the final deadline. Those campuses definitely include: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona, Sonoma State, Fullerton, Long Beach, San Diego State. However, many other Cal State campuses may close applications on November 30 as well, so consider this to be the final deadline. We urge you to get your applications in by November 30th, and preferably earlier as both websites get extremely busy (and slow) at the end of November. Check the schedule for workshops on essay writing and completing these applications. The schedule is available on both the Daily Bulletin and the College Advisor's Bulletin, as well as on the College Advisor's website.

Both college advisors are also available to review your applications before they are submitted, but will need a day or two of turn-around time, so don't wait until the last minute.

FINANCIAL AID PART 1 FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS – Thursday, October 16, 6:30 pm, BHS library. Sue Kim, a financial aid expert, will explain how financial aid is calculated for both public and private schools and answer your questions. She will also provide information on merit aid.
