*New to the bulletin today
ADMINISTRATION
1. The California Exit exam will be given to Juniors and Seniors in the Jacket Gym today(English) and tomorrow (Math). Those who need to take the test should have received notification already. If you believe you need to take the test but haven't been notified, please check in with your counselor. If you believe you've already passed it, please bring verification to your counselor. Call Ms. Glenchur at 644-4566 if you have any questions.
2. Heads up Students- Progress reports are out and teacher tutorials in all subjects have started after school. Stop by the front desk for a schedule.
3. There are new procedures for taking ID pictures and purchasing duplicate ID pictures. Sign up on Mondays to take pictures for new IDs and you will be called in to take them by appointment only. Duplicates will now cost $10.00, you pay your fee to Ms. Reed in D173 and take your paperwork to Ms. Cooks. Any questions regarding the new IDs may contact Ms. Cooks.
4. Yearbook Announcement: Senior baby pictures are due by October 31st with self addressed envelopes in H102B 7th period. Yearbooks are on sale for $65 until October 15th in H102 or buy them on myyear.com.
*5. Willard MathWorks begins today, October 7th, 3:30 - 4:30 pm. See you there!
6. Interested in doing some real science? Join the Ecology project in doing sea turtle research and forest restoration in Costa Rica. Contact Mr. Wolkenfeld in G212 if interested, or send an email to gwolkenfeld at berkeley.k12.ca.us. Anticipated dates are 6/18 - 7/02/09.
7. Who says you have to be a doctor to save a life? Donate blood in a safe environment -- in school -- on October 24th in the Jacket Gym. Go to www.BeADonor.com, and put in the sponsor code: Berkeley High to schedule an appointment. Free baseball caps to donors!

CLUBS
*1. Do you feel like what you’re reading in English class, just isn't enough? Join the Independent Reading club, Thursdays at lunch in room G204, and have a chance to discuss complex and thoughtful works of literature. Our first book will be As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, and we will be discussing up to page 40 this Thursday.
*2. Cold weather is coming. Do you need a scarf or hat to stay warm? Come to the library during lunch for knitting club. We will meet on Fridays. Beginners are welcome; we have yarn and needles for you. Look for the Knitting Club sign at the reserved table.
*3. Come to the Asian and Pacific Islanders Committee in Room C335 to meet new people and get in touch with your Asian side! All are welcome!
4. Are you interested in celebrating our Latino Heritage at BHS? Do you want to help organize a celebration for “Dia de los Muertes” and much more? Be a part of La Raza Club. Come join us for our first meeting, October 14th at 3:30 pm in the Parent Resource Center. (D224, right next to the Library). Gracias!
5. Mr. Angell's “History Club” is meeting today at lunchtime in C310. Come and discuss issues in US History and current events.
6. Earphone English in C124 at lunch on Wednesday. Come join us for a beginning of the year celebration, welcoming new members. Pizza and drinks will be provided, and feel free to bring something else to share!
SPORTS
*1. This week the Berkeley High Football Teams will be playing in a game that will be recorded by Comcast on Thursday, October 9th. In honor of this game the school will have a pep rally during lunch on Wednesday, October 8th. Everyone should report to the senior steps to participate in games, give aways, and half price ticket sales. There will be music, dance, cheer, and announcements about the blackout. There will also be an opportunity to meet the coach, the players and the school's new athletic director.
2. Are you interested in purchasing a letterman's jacket? The representative from NEFF will be here to fit you for a jacket and place your order on October 15, 2008 during lunch. They will set up in front of the Athletic Office. The make-up date will be October 21. See Mr. O in the Athletic Office for forms and details.
3. The BHS Girl's Tennis Team is off to a terrific start, winning their first two matches. GO JACKETS! Please come out and cheer when they play their next home match at the Hopkins Street courts at 3:30 pm today.

FOR SOPHOMORES/JUNIORS
PSAT -- REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8. Berkeley High School is offering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15 from 8:30-11:30 at school. Room assignments will be announced closer to the test date. All sophomores will automatically be registered for the test and can take it for free, due to a generous donation from an anonymous donor. Juniors can register with Ms. Reed in D173 at lunchtime and immediately after school. Cost is $15. Fee reductions are available for low income students. The PSAT is an excellent practice test for the SAT, which is required by the UC's, Cal States and many private schools. For juniors only, it is also the qualifying exam for National Merit scholarships.
FOR SENIORS
1. Calling all Seniors! Achievers will be here on October 7th, 9th, and 10th taking your class rings, cap and gown and graduation orders. A senior year is not a good year without the senior goodies. So order early and get the best prices. If you have any questions call Achievers directly at 408-441-7200. Order forms will be given to all seniors today in your English classes. Remember on October 7th, 9th, and 10th look for the blue tent outside of the cafeteria. Come on seniors let Berkeley High know who you are!

5. SCHOLARSHIPS
Horatio Alger Association -- Open to graduating seniors, planning to pursue a bachelor's degree, (but may start at a community college), with family income no more than $50,000, involved in co-curricular and community activities, with a minimum GPA of 2.0, who is a US citizen. Apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Scholarships from $2,000-20,000. Deadline: October 30.
