STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
October 3, 2008

*New to the bulletin today

ADMINISTRATION

*1.  There are new procedures for taking ID pictures and purchasing duplicate ID pictures.  Sign up on Mondays to take pictures for new IDs and you will be called in to take them by appointment only. Duplicates will now cost $10.00, you pay your fee to Ms. Reed in D173 and take your paperwork to Ms. Cooks.  Any questions regarding the new IDs may contact Ms. Cooks.

*2.  The Health Center will be closed on Monday, October 6th.  In case of emergency, please call the school front desk, and they will call emergency services.

*3.  Yearbook Announcement: Senior baby pictures are due by October 31st with self addressed envelopes in H102B 7th period.  Yearbooks are on sale for $65 until October 15th in H102 or buy them on myyear.com.

*4.  Thanks to all of you Yellowjackets who have participated in our impromptu week of peace!  Please come out today for our Hands Off Dance Off!

*5.  Who says you have to be a doctor to save a life?  Donate blood in a safe environment -- in school -- on October 24th in the Jacket Gym.  Go to www.BeADonor.com, and put in the sponsor code: Berkeley High to schedule an appointment.  Free baseball caps to donors!

6.  Celebrate our freedom to read this week during Banned Book Week! Come to the library to see the display of titles that have been challenged in school and public libraries.  Fill out a slip to guess why someone objected to each of these books.  Win a prize!

7.  Interested in doing some real science?  Join the Ecology project in doing sea turtle research and forest restoration in Costa Rica.  Contact Mr. Wolkenfeld in G212 if interested, or send an email to gwolkenfeld at berkeley.k12.ca.us.  Anticipated dates are 6/18 - 7/02/09.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

*PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS COLLEGE FAIR – Sunday, October 5, 1:00-3:00 pm, Regency Center, Sutter Room, 1270 Sutter St., SF.  This is an excellent opportunity to have your portfolio evaluated by college representatives before you apply, as well as to find out about schools from across the country that offer excellent programs in the arts.

FOR SOPHOMORES/JUNIORS

PSAT -- REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8.  Berkeley High School is offering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15 from 8:30-11:30 at school. Room assignments will be announced closer to the test date.  All sophomores will automatically be registered for the test and can take it for free, due to a generous donation from an anonymous donor.  Juniors can register with Ms. Reed in D173 at lunchtime and immediately after school.  Cost is $15.  Fee reductions are available for low income students.  The PSAT is an excellent practice test for the SAT, which is required by the UC's, Cal States and many private schools.  For juniors only, it is also the qualifying exam for National Merit scholarships.

2.  SCHOLARSHIPS

California Museum Dreamers' Challenge -- Submit an essay, video, audio or artwork to tell us how your dream will leave a lasting mark on the state, nation and the world.  Must be a senior and California resident.  Award - $5,000 cash and attend the California Hall of Fame Events.  Application available in D221 and at www.CaliforniaMuseum.org.  Received deadline:  October 10.

Horatio Alger Association -- Open to graduating seniors, planning to pursue a bachelor's degree, (but may start at a community college), with family income no more than $50,000, involved in co-curricular and community activities, with a minimum GPA of 2.0, who is a US citizen. Apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.  Scholarships from $2,000-20,000.  Deadline:  October 30.

EVENTS

1.  Want to show off your moves and represent the class of 2010 while doing it?  October 24th will be the auditions for class rally dances, so get your groups together and get ready to dance it off and show the school what you've got!

2.  Artists: Want to show off your artistic skill?  If so, we are accepting Junior class rally T-shirt designs.  Submit your designs ASAP to D148.  The winner gets a free T-shirt.
