STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

ADMINISTRATION
1. Do you want to work and learn about the election process? Do you want to make some extra money and serve your community? Come by D148 for details.
2. BART ticket orders for October will be on September 25th and 26th in room D224 at lunch time only. Tickets are $16 each. September BART tickets have arrived. Please pick up your tickets today through September 22 at lunchtime only in Room D-224. All tickets must be picked up by September 22. Please note: No tickets will be held after September 22!!
3. Yearbooks are for sale in H102B for $65 until October 15th. Then prices will go up. Discounts for students with free and reduced lunches. Yearbooks can also be purchased online at myyear.com.
4. Final day to take ID pictures will be Thursday September 25 from 11:15-4:00 pm in the Community Theatre.
CLUBS
*1. Come to watch the French movie “Amelie”! Free food will be provided. Today at lunch in room C102 with the French Club!
2. Today, Friday, is the last day to apply for Youth Advisory Board. Don’t miss out on the chance to make a difference and get paid, plus class credit. Deadline today at 4 pm at the Health Center.
3. Attention Small School Students! The Jacket wants you! Do you like to write, draw, photograph, do multimedia reporting or love being involved in your community? Come to our lunchtime meeting in C213 on Monday, September 22nd. Everyone is welcome.
4. Interested in doing shoreline cleanups, soup kitchens, and other awesome community service events? Come to Key Club, Monday at lunch in C326 for more information.
5. Youth for Christ Club meets every Friday at lunch in C311! Open to everyone who is interested. Food will be provided.
6. Attention Clubs and Club Sponsors! Please come to D148 to register your club! We need to complete an updated club list for the 2008/2009 school year and we need your information.
7. Class of 2011: Represent your class! We need artists for t-shirt designs and dancers for the rally. Come to D148 with your ideas.
8. Calling all Berkeley High vocalists! Shower singers or experienced vocalists please help us bring down the house for Berkeley High. 20-50 students are wanted who would like to perform 1-2 songs with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir on Saturday October 4 at BHS. A brief and simple audition is required. If interested, please contact Trelawny Rose at: vocalfreedom at gmail.com.
SPORTS
Anyone interested in weight training can participate in our strength and conditioning program. The hours are Monday through Friday from 3:45-5:45pm in the weight room. You must have a completed packet on file to participate. Packets can be picked up in the athletic office during lunch. See Mr. O. if you have any questions.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
1. Office help needed in small home business in Northwest Berkeley, 2-3 hours a week after school. For a capable, responsible and reliable student familiar with Mac, Word, email programs. 2. FREE COLLEGE PLANNING WORKSHOP IN SPANISH – Sunday, September 28, 4:00-6:00 pm, St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 1825 Church Lane, San Pablo. Led by Monica Montenegro from the East Bay Consortium. For more information or to RSVP, contact Joann Steck-Bayat at 510-524-9464.
3. PSAT – Berkeley High School is offering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15 from 8:30-11:30 am. All sophomores will automatically be registered for the test and can take it for free, due to a generous donation from an anonymous donor. Juniors can sign up for the test now. Register with Ms. Reed in D173 at lunchtime and immediately after school. Cost is $15. Fee reductions are available for low income students. The PSAT is an excellent practice test for the SAT, which is required by the University of California, Cal State Universities, and many private schools. For juniors only, it is also the qualifying exam for National Merit scholarships.
FOR SENIORS
1. Incentive Awards Program – Find out about this excellent scholarship/mentorship/leadership development program for students applying to UC Berkeley. You are eligible to apply if you are UC eligible, have a minimum unweighted 3.5 GPA from your UC approved classes taken in 10th and 11th grades, come from a low income family, and are a US citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen. Informational meeting, today (Friday, September 19) at lunch in Conference Room B.
2. Free SAT Prep Class – Starts Tuesday, September 23 in H103. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 pm. One day will focus on the math section and the other day on the critical reading section of the test. There is no need to register in advance, just come to H103. 3. WORKSHOPS FOR SENIORS: Sign up in advance in the College/Career Center to attend a workshop. (MORE TO COME!)

4. Reminder: If you are applying to private colleges that need a counselor recommendation, your Senior Profiles were due on September 5th (if you are applying Early Decision or Early Action or to any school that requires a recommendation by November 1) and are due on September 19th if you are applying Regular Decision. You do NOT need to fill these out if you are applying only to the University of California, Cal State Universities or community colleges.
5. College Visits:
Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career Center every year. Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the permission of the teacher whose class they are missing. Sign up in advance in the College/Career Center and pick up a permission slip. 6. SAT/ACT TEST DATES – Friday, September 19 is the regular registration deadline for the October 25 ACT test. Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.
SCHOLARSHIPS
1. Sinkler Miller Medical Association Scholarship – Open to seniors who are SF Bay Area residents, minimum GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate financial need and plan to attend a two or four year college in the fall. Twelve $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applications available in D221. Deadline: September 20.
2. California Museum’s Dreamers Challenge – Submit an essay, video, audio or artwork to tell us how your dream will leave a lasting mark on the state, nation and the world. Must be a senior and California resident. Award - $5,000 cash and attend the California Hall of Fame Events. Application available in D221 and at www.CaliforniaMuseum.org . Deadline: October 10.
3. Horatio Alger Association – Open to graduating seniors, planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree (but may start at a community college), with family income no more than $50,000, involved in co-curricular and community activities, with a minimum GPA of 2.0, who is a US citizen. Apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships . Scholarships from $2,000-20,000. Deadline: October 30.
EVENTS
*1. Artists: Want to show off your artistic skill? If so, we are accepting Junior class rally T-shirt designs. Submit your designs ASAP to D148. The winner gets a free t-shirt.
2. Want to show off you moves and represent the class of 2010 while doing it? October 24th will be the auditions for class rally dances, so get your groups together and get ready to dance it off and show the school what you got!
3. See you at the pole! Youth for Christ Club is participating in the National Day of Prayer for the school – Christians and non Christians are all invited. Come September 24th from 7:30 – 8:30 am at the BHS flagpole.
4. City of Berkeley, Teen Program is taking teens to Sacramento on Sept. 20th, (9am-6:30pm) to "Raging Waters" Waterside Park. Spaces are still available, please stop by the Recreation Office on 1947 Center St., 1st floor and pick up a permission slip. The cost is $15 per child. Please bring spending money, towel, sunscreen, and swim wear. All forms must be turned in by Thursday September 18th.
