STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

September 15, 2008



*New to the bulletin today



ADMINISTRATION

 

1.  No more schedule changes will be made by the
counselors.  If you have an incorrect class or are in the wrong level, you
may see your counselor. Counselors will accept drop-ins during lunch.





2.  Yearbooks are for
sale in H102B for $65 until October 15th.  Then prices will go up.  Discounts for students with free and reduced
lunches.  Yearbooks can also be purchased online at myyear.com.



3.  Final day to take ID pictures will be
Thursday September 25 from 11:15-4:00 pm in the Community Theatre.



4.  Mathworks needs you!  Receive tutoring, community service and even
leadership credit for tutoring middle school students
at Willard on Tuesdays between 3:30 and 4:30 pm starting in October.  Contact:  Willardmathworks at gmail.com or call Karen at

CLUBS

 

*1.    The debate team will meet today
(Monday September 15) at lunch for an introductory meeting.  It’s tons of
fun, looks great on college applications and we will have food
too.  Drop in C128 today at lunch and see what it’s all about!

 

2.  Become a Jacket
reporter, illustrator or photographer!  Come Mondays at lunch to C213 to learn how to
receive class credit for participating in our school paper.  We especially encourage new writers and small
school students -- no writing or art experience is required!  Today (Monday September
15) is an important meeting.  Please attend.





3.  Attention Clubs
and Club Sponsors!  Please come to D148
to register your club!  We need to
complete an updated club list for the 2008/2009 school year and we need your
information.





4.  Class of 2011:
Represent your class!  We need artists for t-shirt designs and dancers for
the rally.  Come to D148 with your ideas.



5.  Be a part of your campus!  Educate your peers on health issues!  Make a difference in the Health Center! 
Get class credit!  Youth Advisory Board applications
are available in the health center. 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th
graders may all apply.  Apply today!



6.  Calling all Berkeley High
vocalists!  Shower singers or experienced vocalists please help us bring
down the house for Berkeley High. 20-50 students are wanted who would like to
perform 1-2 songs with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel
Choir on Saturday October 4 at BHS. 
A brief and simple audition is required.  If interested, please contact Trelawny Rose

SPORTS

 

*1.    Interested in joining the Fencing
club?  Come to a meeting on Wednesday September 17 at lunch in front of
the Athletic Office.



2.  BHS crew wants you!  Come to the first team meeting on Wednesday September 17, 4;15 pm, at the BHS football field metal
bleachers.  Learn more about men’s and
women’s crew, meet varsity rowers and the coaches.  No previous rowing
experience is required!



3.  Our new Athletics
Director Mr. O is looking for some enthusiastic game announcers.  If you would like to be an announcer, please
come by the athletics office to audition for the position.  If chosen, you
will be the MC for either the football games or the basketball games. There
will also be opportunities to MC for other BHS Sports.  Be at the Athletics Office on Tuesday
September 16 at lunch -- ready for anything!





JOB OPPORTUNITIES





Homework Helper needed in math and language arts for 8th
grade girl.  One hour 2-3 times per week.

3.  PSAT – Berkeley High School is offering
the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15 from 8:30-11:30
am.  All sophomores will automatically be
registered for the test and can take it for free, due to a generous donation
from an anonymous donor.  Juniors can
sign up for the test now.  Register with
Ms. Reed in D173 at lunchtime and immediately after school.  Cost is $15.  Fee reductions are available for low income students.  The PSAT is an excellent practice test for the
SAT, which is required by the University of California,
Cal State Universities, and many private
schools.  For juniors only, it is also
the qualifying exam for National Merit scholarships.





FOR SENIORS



REMINDER:  If you are applying to private colleges that need a counselor recommendation,
your Senior Profiles were due on September 5th (if you are applying Early Decision or Early Action or to any school that
requires a recommendation by November 1) and are
due on September 19th if you are applying Regular Decision.  You do NOT need to fill these out if you are
applying only to the University of California, Cal State Universities or community
colleges.



COLLEGE VISITS

Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career Center
every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10
of those meetings, with the permission of the teacher whose class they are
missing.  Sign up in advance in the

regular registration deadline for the October 25
ACT test.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS 



*1.  Sinkler Miller Medical Association
Scholarship – Open to seniors who are SF Bay Area residents, minimum GPA of 3.0
who demonstrate financial need and plan to attend a two or four year college in
the fall.  Twelve $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Applications
available in D221.  Deadline: September 20. 




*2.  California Museum’s Dreamers
Challenge – Submit an essay, video, audio or artwork to tell us how your dream
will leave a lasting mark on the state, nation and the world.  Must be a
senior and California resident.  Award - $5,000 cash and attend the
California Hall of Fame Events.  Application available in D221 and at www.CaliforniaMuseum.org .  Deadline: 
October 10.



*3.  Horatio
Alger Association – Open to graduating seniors, planning to
pursue a bachelor’s degree (but may start at a community college), with family income
no more than $50,000, involved in co-curricular and community activities, with
a minimum GPA of 2.0, who is a US citizen.  Apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships
.  Scholarships from $2,000-20,000. 
Deadline:  October
30. 





EVENTS

 

*1. City of Berkeley, Teen Program is taking teens to
Sacramento on Sept. 20th, (9am-6:30pm) to "Raging Waters" Waterside Park.
Spaces are still available, please stop by the Recreation Office on 1947 Center
St., 1st floor and pick up a permission slip. The cost is $15 per child.  Please bring spending money, towel,
sunscreen, and swim wear. All forms must be turned in by Thursday September
18th. If you have any additional questions please contact Ginsi Bryant, Teen
Coordinator, at 981-5147, or email gbryant at ci.berkeley.ca.us.

 

2.  Are you a model?
Has anyone told you, you look like a model?  Is one of your dreams
becoming a model?  If you answered yes, to any of these questions then
please come out after school to an open casting call.  Female and Males are needed!  We
encourage students of all shapes and sizes to come.  Also, we will help
you build your portfolio.  Come to Linda
Carr’s dance room today (Monday, September 15) at 3:15 pm if you are
interested.  This event is sponsored by the students of City College of
San Francisco.
