At Tuesday night's PTSA meeting, we will also be looking for
volunteers for another very important committee - the Berkeley High
Safety Committee. The California Education Code requires that all
public schools develop and annually update a comprehensive school
safety plan that addresses the safety concerns identified through a
systematic planning process.
The School Site Council (the SGC at BHS) delegates the responsibility
for developing the plan to a school safety planning committee made up
of the BHS administration, teachers, parents, students and the BPD
officer assigned to the school. Last year, there were four parent
members plus two alternates on the safety committee. Parent
volunteers are needed not only as official parent members of the
Safety Committee, but also as participants in the work of the various
subcommittees that address safety issues in more depth.
The school safety plan shall include, but not be limited to, assessing
the current status of crime committed on school campuses and at
school-related functions, and identifying appropriate strategies and
programs that will provide or maintain a high level of school safety.
The plan must contain policies regarding suspension and expulsion,
procedures to notify teachers of dangerous pupils, hate crime
reporting procedures, etc. The plan must also include policies and
procedures for preparing for and responding to earthquakes and other
disasters. Alcohol and drug issues may also be addressed.
No written statements are needed to be considered for this committee,
nor does anyone need to worry about giving any speeches in front of
large crowds - interested parents simply need to volunteer on Tuesday
night to participate in the committee. If you can not attend Tuesday
night's PTSA meeting, but would like to be considered, please contact
PTSA President Mark van Krieken at markvk4 at comcast.net. We look
forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Mark van Krieken (PTSA President)
Don Morgan (Safety Committee Parent Rep)
