1. The first three days of school were, as always, exciting. Currently
we have 3116 students with 202 no-shows in the system. We expect that
a few new students will arrive after Labor Day resulting in a
projected enrollment of 3171.

2. Last Friday, August 29, was the last day to turn in schedule
request forms. Many students are understandably anxious to receive
their schedule changes. The counselors are working as fast as they
can to process all requests and hope to complete the majority of them
by the end of the week. Parent volunteers are delivering the changes
to students in their classrooms. Until a student receives a schedule
change they should attend the incorrect schedule--how else will we
find you?

2. PE uniforms are being sold in the PE Office located in the Old Gym
before school, after school, and at lunch for the next week. Please
note that they are no longer being sold out of the Athletic Director's
office, but from the PE office, which is accessible by entering the
gym from Milvia Street, under the "Girls Gymnasium" sign at the south
end of the building. The office is just to the left once you walk in
through the outside double doors.

3. For lockers, and problems with lockers, students should go to H104.

4. Jazz Ensemble tryouts will take place this week. The BHS Jazz
Ensemble will be holding auditions for all interested students - new
and returning. Please let your student know of the following dates
and times for auditions. All interested students are encouraged to
audition. Come prepared to do scales, improvisation and some sight
reading.
   Wed, Sept 3rd - Trombones
   Thursday, Sept 4th - Trumpets
Friday, Sept 5th - Saxes and Rhythm instruments

ALL AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD AT 3:30P IN THE BAND ROOM (A201). Please
contact Charles Hamilton at BHS with any questions re auditions:
chamilton at berkeley.k12.ca.us.

5. On Wednesday. September 3rd Principal Slemp, Vice Principal Walton
and Dean Ramos will meet with all students each period during English
classes in an assembly in the Community Theater. (Students report to
their classes as usual and then come to the theater accompanied by
their teacher.) The administrators will go over the Attendance Policy
and basic discipline expectations.

6. During the assemblies, Seniors and Juniors will receive information
regarding military recruitment and waivers should they not want to be
contacted by members of the military.

7. Student Clubs. Many students and parents have inquired about a list
of student clubs. Ms Edith Jordan our Student Activity Director is
working on this. Some clubs endure year to year. Others last only a
few seasons. The operative word here is "student." Each year
interested student leaders line up sponsors and sign up to be a club.
They then announce club meetings via the Student Daily Bulletin.
Students interested in clubs should listen carefully during 2nd period
when the announcements are read. (Soon we will be sending the Student
Daily Bulletin home via the etree--it just hasn't gotten going yet. )

8. Picture ID makeups will take place September 9 11:15 am - 4:00 pm
and September 25 11:15-4:00 in the Community Theater.

9. Cell Phone Policy. Students are allowed to use their cell phones
before school, during lunch and after school. Students are not
allowed to use their cell phones during passing periods, in the hall
or in the classrooms. Cell phones must be turned off during all other
times and kept out of sight. Students who use cell phones during class
time or passing period, or if the cell pone rings in class, will have
their phone confiscated and turned into an administrator. The
administrator will determine when and how the cell phone will be
returned.

10. Math testing. The Berkeley High School math department will
conduct a final round of Honors testing for the 08/09 school year on
Tuesday 9/2 and Thursday 9/4. The exams will be given at 3:45 pm in
room H306.
   * Students take an exam to test into either Honors Geometry, Honors
Algebra 2 or Honors Math Analysis. All exams consist of a 45-problem
multiple-choice test to be completed in 45 minutes.
   * Students need to bring a pencil and a scientific (non-graphing)
calculator. Students new to the district also need to supply the
e-mail address of their current math teacher.
Students need to sign up with Mr. Weitz in H306 to take the test at
mweitz at berkeley.k12.ca.us

11. Free and reduced lunch forms are available at the Front Desk.
