STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
June 4, 2008

Administration

1. Yearbooks will be distributed after school in H102.  Please have
your receipts and ID's to pick them up.  Yearbooks are still on sale.

*2.  Achievers will be on campus today at lunch.

3. Attention all students signed up for AP Spanish Literature! Please
come by C125 after school any day this week (June 2nd - June 6th) to
pick up your required summer reading material from Sr. Lobo. Gracias!

4. Attention all students, including graduating seniors; The Health
center will be open this summer.  Call or drop in for an appointment
at 644-6965.

5. All lost and found items will be placed next to the library on
Wednesday at lunchtime until 3:30 pm.  Please check for lost items,
all items left will be donated to BOSS  on Thursday for distribution
to local shelters that serve children and youth.

6. Attention Awesome BHS students!  Your Band and Orchestra has a
special treat for you this Thursday night at 7:30 pm in the Little
Theater. Come support your classmates and hear super exciting chamber
music by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as jazz and Blues and
swing songs by more recent composers.  It's free, and there will be a
bake sale.

7. Graduation tickets are on sale in D173.  Tickets are $5 each.

8. For the first time, BERKELEY INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL T-SHIRTS
will go on sale Friday, June 6 in front of the Donohue Gym.  The
shirts come in green and blue so you can get one in your house color.
The cost is $15 and money from the sale will go to support BIHS. Cash
or checks made out to Berkeley High School Development Group will be
accepted.  QUANTITIES ARE LIMITED.

9. All sophomores who are signed up for AP Language and Composition
next year, your summer reader is in!  Please pick it up from Ms. Tebbe
in C216 during lunch any day.  The summer reading assignment is
mandatory.

*10.  If you are signed up for AP Music Theory or IB Music, see Ms.
Wells in A201 to pick up your summer reader.

11. BHS Summer School takes place Wednesday, June 18 through Friday,
July 25.  Applications and course offerings are available through your
counselor.  Priority registration takes place from now until June 2nd.
Summer school is offered only to students who earned a D or an F in an
academic class.  If you think you may need to be in Summer School,
make sure you register now!

12. denise brown memorial project:  do you have great memories of ms.
brown? Funny stories? Songs you remember singing in her kindergarten
class? AHA is collecting the writing and artwork of students, parents
and staff at Berkeley High to honor the memory and spirit of denise
brown. Anyone who is interested in contributing can bring their
writing, artwork, photography, etc., to Mr. Cagan in Room A105. If you
are interested in being videotaped to talk about Ms. brown, or to do a
performance piece, let Mr. Cagan know and we will arrange a date for
videotaping. The completed project will be a book of collected writing
and artwork, along with a DVD of Ms. Brown and her students and
friends. Seniors - make sure to get your submissions in before you
leave Berkeley High!"

13. Those of you who participated in the Pomp and Circumstance
project, must have one parent sign the release form for us to use your
photograph.  You may pick up your release form from Vice-Principal
Vernon Walton's office in D-156.  Please return the release form to
Vice Principal Walton's office by Wednesday, June 11th.  All
participants are entitled to one 5x7 inch photograph and groups get
one photograph.  Those 17 years old must have one parental signature
before you receive your photograph.  Those of you who were 18, amd
participated in the project, may also pick up up your photograph from
Mr. Walton's office.  Thank you for participating in this documentary.

Clubs

1. FIRE meeting on Thursday, June 5, for the celebration of our
accomplishments this year.

2. Earphone English - last meeting we will be recording again for the
blog and planning for the summer and next year.  Come on by C116 at
lunch Wednesday, June 4th.

3. Jacket Aviation if you are interested in airplanes or aviation or
would just like to learn more about airplanes come by.  We will be
raising money going to aircraft museums , hear guest speakers and
participating in many volunteer activities that involve aviation come
to D220.

Sports

*1. Attention all Track athletes:  Come to an important meeting on the
track on Thursday at 4:30 to turn in uniforms, pick up pictures and
get information about the banquet on Saturday. 

Events

1. Youth Musical Theater Company is holding auditions on June  3 & 5
at the Metal Shop Theater (Willard Middle School) for its fall show,
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. FIDDLER is a classic tale about life in the tiny
town of Anatevka, during a time of violent change in Russia. Beautiful
music, funny and poignant script, many male and female principle
roles, large singing/dancing chorus.  We are looking for singers,
actors and dancers of all ethnicities.  On the surface this is a story
about Russian Jews, but it is truly a story about all immigrants who
have to leave their homes, traditions and families behind to make new
lives for themselves somewhere else.  For more information, go to

*2. Come see the World premiere of the Writing on the wall a new play
by Katie Henry, about trust, betrayal and a class that puts Catcher in
the Rye on trial.  June 5,6th at 7 pm. [The location of the play was

Senior/ Junior Section

1. JUNIORS: The new Introducing the University booklet from the
University of California is now available in D221.  This very helpful
booklet contains information on each UC campus including lists of
majors, student and admissions data and contact information, as well
as general information on applying for admissions and financial aid.
If you are planning to apply to any UC campuses in the fall, please
stop by to pick up your copy. 

2. The JUNIOR Summer To Do List and the Senior Profile are now
available in the College/Career Center.  Students and their
parents/guardians must complete the Senior Profile if they are
applying to any college which requires a counselor recommendation.
The UC's and Cal States do not accept counselor recommendations.
Although the completed Senior Profile is not due until September, we
strongly recommend that students fill it out over the summer because
they will be extremely busy in the fall. 

4. SCHOLARSHIPS: Salvadoran-American Leadership and Educational Fund
(SALEF) - Open to graduating seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who
have a background of Salvadoran, Central American, Latino ethnicity,
have financial need, and have a history of community service and
involvement.  recipients must be able to help other students through
mentoring,~community service, or tutoring after receiving the award.
The application is available at www.salef.org .  Scholarship:
$500-$2,500.  Deadline:  June 30. 

Summer Opportunities

*1. SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR CURRENT JUNIORS AND SENIORS -
The Environmental Health Science Division at UC Berkeley is looking
for 2-3 current high school juniors and seniors to volunteer as summer
interns in their lab. Dr. Holland is the director of the School of
Public Health Biorepository which houses, maintains, and analyzes
thousands of samples from ongoing and previous studies. Interns will
be primarily working on projects relating to the Biorepository.~ They
will learn how to bank samples, use Access based databases to properly
log and retrieve samples, and become familiar with sample storage and
management. In addition, interns will have the opportunity to learn
basic lab science techniques and be introduced to advanced laboratory
skills including biological sample processing, DNA isolation,
genotyping, PCR, ELIZA, and enzymatic assays. This is a great
opportunity for students thinking about a career in research or
medicine. No prior lab experience is necessary.  Students must commit
at least 4 days a week, at least 5 hours a day, for at least one month

their most current GPA (excluding this semester), and a short
