Pomp and Circumstance: First Time To Be Adults
Bayeté Ross Smith is a local artist and educator
teaching at The California College of the Arts
(CCA). He has exhibited his work locally in the
Bay Area and internationally in places such as
Europe and Africa. His most recent
accomplishments include the video mosaic, Along
the Way, which was an official selection for the
2008 Sundance Film Festival; an exhibition of his
work, Our Kind Of People, at City Hall in San
Francisco; a fellowship at the Kala Arts
Institute in Berkeley; a feature story about him
in the Fall 2007 issue of Exposure, a
twice-yearly publication from the Society for
Photographic Education; and a commission from the
Oakland Airport in conjunction with the Cause
Collective in 2007.

Bayeté's current project is an exploration of
high school proms as a rite of passage in
American society. This tradition is often the
first time teenagers have to as adults, with
their communities complete consent and he is
interested in this expression of identity at the
start of adulthood. Also, within the greater
genre of portraiture, Bayeté is interested in how
the prom picture serves as a document of this
identity and where it stands within our social
history as a memorial

Berkeley High is an important institution in the
Bay Area. It stands as one of the more diverse
institutions in regards to racial and ethnic make
up, but also in regards to thought and ideology.
This project is a good opportunity for the
students to be heard and recognized, both within
and outside their communities in the Bay Area
Bayeté has received permission from Vernon Walton
and Chris Young and will be taking pictures at
this year's prom. He would greatly appreciate
your assistance by allowing him to photograph
your kids for this project.
