SAT WORD OF THE DAY: ECLECTIC - based on a wide variety of influences.  
American cooking tends to be an eclectic mixture of many ethnic 
cuisines, reflecting the cultural diversity of the U.S.

*FOOD AND DRINK DONATIONS NEEDED FOR SENIOR AWARDS CEREMONY -  The 
Senior Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. in 
the Community Theater.  This is a wonderful tradition where we honor 
seniors for all of their accomplishments and successes.  The ceremony 
is followed by a reception.  If you can donate baked goods (finger
foods only, please) or drinks (water, juice or soda), paper plates, 
napkins, or cups please e-mail  or call Angela Price at  (510) 644-4576

FOR ALL GRADES
Youth Spirit Artworks is holding an art competition for Berkeley youth, 
giving young people the opportunity to create art designs for wooden 
benches along the Adeline Street Corridor in South Berkeley. The themes 
for the bench designs need to relate to health and health care reform 
since this is part of a health education campaign in South and West 
Berkeley addressing health disparities in our community. The bench 
designs chosen will be painted on nine local benches in 2008. The name 
of the artist/designer will be designated on each bench. Designs will 
be accepted through June 1st. Prizes are available for the top three 
designs chosen. For information contact:

SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY – Community Reading Buddies bring together 
student volunteer mentors and young children at two Oakland child 
development centers.  Volunteers work with young children, reading 
stories together and animating educational activities to encourage 
literacy and learning.  Students must volunteer a minimum two weeks for 
at least two days each week. Program runs from June 16 thru August 7, 
Mon-Thurs., 1:00-3:30 pm. Applications available in D221.  For more

JOB OPENING - Older couple needs help around the house – cleaning up 
the basement, using a weed eater on the lawn, some painting, and 
miscellaneous household work.  Hours are flexible.  Call 525-5957 for 
more information.  $8.00 per hour and up, depending on responsibility.

Meyer Sound Labs has 4-6, possibly 10 paid summer internships for high 
school students (must be 16 years old) in manufacturing operations, 
marketing, and document control doing assembly or data entry type work. 
Interns must commit to a minimum of 6-8 weeks for 30 hours per week. 
Interested students can pick up an application in D221 or stop by Meyer 
Sound at 2832 San Pablo Ave. (near Ashby) between 8:30 AM and 5 PM to

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY – Thursday, May 22, Lake Temescal, East Bay 
Regional Park District hosts Special Kids Fishing Derbies for disabled 
elementary school children.  Every child needs an older “buddy” to 
escort them through the day’s activities.  Volunteers will attend an 
orientation before the elementary students arrive, receive a free 
t-shirt and breakfast and lunch.  For more information, call

Intern for Congresswoman Barbara Lee over the summer – Interns will be 
taught how to organize, empower and mobilize the voting public behind 
both Congresswoman Lee and the causes and candidates she endorses.  No

”8 of the Best Colleges” – Claremont McKenna, Colorado College,

*TODAY - SAT/ACT TEST DATES – May 15 is the late registration deadline 
for the June 7 SAT and SAT subject tests.  May 23 is the late 
registration deadline for the June 14 ACT test.  Fee waivers for the 
ACT for low income students are available in D221.   These are the last 
tests until the fall.

FOR SENIORS
Hispanic/Latino students - win free tickets to and from your college 
campus.  Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges 
and Universities (HACU) are sponsoring a travel award program.  If you 
are enrolled in a two or four year college, have at least a 2.5 GPA and 
economic need, you can apply for up to four round-trip tickets on 
Southwest Airlines for yourself and/or your parent to use when 
traveling to or from your college.  For more information, go to 
www.hacu.net .  Deadline:  May 30.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Gill Scholarship - Open to graduating seniors who are planning a major 
in business, computer science, engineering, health science, teaching, 
math or the natural sciences and have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0.  
Deadline has been extended until May 16.  $2,000 scholarship per year, 
renewable for three additional years in college.  Applications 
available in D221.

Salvadoran-American Leadership and Educational Fund (SALEF) – Open to 
graduating seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who have a background of 
Salvadoran, Central American, Latino ethnicity, have financial need, 
and have a history of community service and involvement.  recipients 
must be able to help other students through mentoring, community 
service, or tutoring after receiving the award.  The application is 
available at www.salef.org .  Scholarship:  $500-$2,500.  Deadline:  
June 30.

Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship Program – Open to U.S. citizens and 
permanent residents who are accepted or enrolled as full-time 
undergraduate students at approved, accredited institution, who have a 
minimum 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), whose combined family 
income is $30,000 or less and whose financial aid packages fall more 
than $1,000 short of students’ financial need. Recipients will be 
selected based on financial need. Unmet Need Scholarships range from 
$1,000 to $3,800.  Deadline:  May 31.  Apply at

Applications for Youth Spirit Artworks 2008 Summer Commercial Arts 
Training Program--Now Being Accepted  Youth Spirit Artworks, the new 
commercial arts training program for youth, is now accepting 
applications for its 2008 summer intensive arts furniture painting jobs 
program which will be held from June 23, 2008 through August 8, 2008. 
Spaces are limited--Youth Spirit will accept 20 youth for the program. 
The summer program will be held from 9:30am to 2:30pm Monday through 
Friday at Berkeley Technology Academy, Art Studio/Room 126, 2701 Martin 
Luther King Jr. Way (at Derby), Berkeley, CA 94703. Free lunch is 
provided. All participating youth completing the program will receive 
stipends, as well as 50 percent of the proceeds of everything we sell.
