Dear Berkeley High Parents & Guardians,

There are two big events being planned for this Wednesday afternoon on
May 14th, to protest Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed budget cuts to
public education.

1) The first starts at 3:00 PM in Hayward at the intersection of
Mission and Foothill Blvd. (You'll see the crowds over by the "five
flags" corner of the intersection.) There will be a series of
speakers and bands - the speakers include State Assemblywoman Mary
Hiyashi and Superintendent of Schools for Alameda County, Sheila
Jordan. The rally is being organized by the CTA (California Teachers'
Association) leadership in Hayward, Castro Valley, San Leandro, New
Haven and Newark. Teachers from all of these districts will be
present at the rally.

2) The second event starts at 4:00 PM in Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland
(in front of the Oakland City Hall off of San Pablo Ave. between 14th
and 15th Streets). This event is being organized by the Oakland and
Alameda offices of the CTA. As of yesterday, the list of speakers had
not yet been finalized. Both State Assembly Members Loni Hancock and
Sandre Swanson have been invited, and are hoped to be able to attend.

If you can make it to either of these events, that would be fantastic!
Even though they are not in Berkeley and have not been organized by
any Berkeley organizations, any opportunity we have to protest the
governor's proposed cuts to education is one we shouldn't miss. We
need to keep letting our voices be heard, no matter where. Thanks for
all your support and we hope you can make it to one of these events.

Sincerely,

Mark van Krieken
BHS PTSA President
