College Advisor's Bulletin
Tuesday, April 8, 2008
SAT WORD OF THE DAY: OBDURATE – stubborn; intransigent. Because of
the obdurate resistance they faced in Stalingrad, the German army was
forced to retreat from the USSR during World War II.
FOR ALL GRADES
SCHOLARSHIP SCAM – I have heard from several parents that they have
received mailings from a group named American Scholarships inviting
them to a “free” seminar and promising help in finding scholarships.
Please note that these types of organizations are scams. You should
NEVER pay for scholarship information. Free scholarship sites include
www.fastweb.com, www.collegeboard.com, www.finaid.org and many others.
In addition, we have lists, as well as application forms, for many
scholarships in the College/Career Center. If you have any questions,
please contact either Ms. Abrams or Ms. Price.

FOR JUNIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – April 10 is the late registration deadline for the
May 3 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 9 is the regular registration
deadline for the June 14 ACT test. Fee waivers for low income students
are available in D221.
FOR SENIORS
*May 1 is the deadline for you to send a Statement of Intent to
Register (SIR) to one of the colleges which has accepted you. After
that date, many colleges will withdraw your admission. It is unethical
to send an SIR to more than one school and if colleges find out that
you have done so, they may rescind your admission. If you are
waitlisted at your first choice school, you must deposit at another
school since no one will be admitted from the waitlist until after May
1. If you would like to discuss your college choices or have questions
about financial aid, waitlists, other schools which are still accepting
applications or anything else in the college application process,
please see your college advisor at lunch or after school.
SENIOR GRADES COUNT – Please remember that although this is your last
quarter of your senior year, you must keep your grades up if you are
planning to attend a four year college in the fall. The college you
are planning to attend will receive a copy of your final transcript.
All admissions decisions are conditional based on your completion of
high school with roughly the same GPA as when you were admitted.
Colleges can and do revoke offers of admission. Don’t let this happen
to you! In addition, if you received a D or an F first semester, you
MUST let each of your colleges know now, if you haven’t done so
already. If you have questions or want to discuss your situation,
please see Ms. Abrams or Ms. Price.
