SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DEBILITATE - to weaken or disable.  Although flu
is usually not a serious illness, it does temporarily debilitate its
victims.

I will be away from school March 24-27, returning on Friday, March 28.

FOR ALL GRADES 
*Street Level Cycles, Berkeley Boathouse and Sew Your Own provide free
services and training for people of all ages to work on bike
mechanics, boat construction, and sewing. This is a great opportunity
to learn these skills for fun or a career. For more information, go to

*Cal Day - Saturday, April 12 from 9am to 4pm.  Over 300 events will
be held on campus including information on admissions, financial aid,
undergraduate research and sessions on each of the many available

Volunteer opportunity - Satellite Housing, a non-profit provider of
affordable housing for low income seniors, families and disabled
person, provides opportunities for residents to connect with their
neighbors.  BHS students - this is a great opportunity to connect with
older adults by creating a garden or participating in one to one
student conducted interviews to produce oral biographies or volunteer

VIDEO CONTEST -  Think Globally, Report Locally Video Contest!
Students are invited to create a one to two minute video news package
showing a local angle on one of four chosen global issues:  1. Kick
the Habit... De-carbonizing our Lifestyles and Economies; 2. World
Heritage... Local Sites and International Interests;  3.
Growing Up Girl... The Challenges Facing Girls Everywhere;  4. World
Water... Access to Clean Water.  The top three teams, consisting of
two students and an educator, will get an experience of a lifetime -
an all expense paid trip to New York to attend the United Nations
Foundation Youth Leadership Summit.  Background information and b-roll
is available for all four topics on SchoolTube.com.  Deadline:  May 2,
2008, but entries uploaded during the months of March and April will
also be eligible for early entry awards. For more information, go to

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS - The 26th Annual Chicano Latino Youth
Leadership Project (CLYLP) Summer Conference will take place in
Sacramento at the California State University, Sacramento campus from
July 26th - August 2nd, 2008.  More than 2,000 California high school
students have participated in the summer conference with over 90% of
CLYLP participants going on to attend college.  Through the training
and tools provided at the conference, CLYLP alumni become successful
leaders in both the public and private sector. The program is open to
current 10th and 11th grade students.  Activities include a
legislative day at the state capitol, campaign development workshops
and a college and careers day, as well as leadership training.  Cost:

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Youth Works summer job applications are available now for Berkeley
residents ages 14-25.  Students can work, take job-readiness workshops
at Berkeley City College, get career counseling and job skills
training, and more!  Applications available at Youth Works, 1947
Center St., Basement in Berkeley, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00 pm.
Deadline:  March 31 at 5:00 pm.  

*Sarah's Science is looking for summer day camp counselors.  Students
must be at least 16 years old, have experience working with children
(babysitting counts), a positive attitude and enjoy guiding and
mentoring children ages 5-12 for science projects, art and camp
activities.  Camps are located in Oakland, Berkeley and Dublin.
Pay: $8.00/hour and up, depending on experience.  Applications

Summer camp jobs - City of Berkeley, Echo Lake Camp near South Lake
Tahoe is hiring for maintenance and kitchen staff as well as
counselors.   Most staff work 8 hour days.  Counselors work about 8
hours each day through the week and have weekends off.  Shifts vary
depending on department.  For more information, go to

Camp Galileo is an art, science and outdoor summer day camp for kids
entering K-5 grade. Volunteer Summer Intern positions at Camp Galileo
are available for high school students in over 19 communities
throughout the Bay Area.  Summer Interns can earn high school
community service credits, gain leadership experience, make new
friends and enjoy an enriching and rewarding summer experience with
children entering K-5th grades. Summer Interns assist with all aspects
of camp-from helping kids with art and science classes to setting up
camp games.  Students can volunteer for 3-8 weeks. Applications

deadline is April 3. Camps run from 6-8 weeks starting June 16 -
August 8.

FOR JUNIORS
*If you have not yet had an appointment with your college advisor, new
appointment sheets will be posted Monday, March 24 at 8:00 am.  Come
by the College/Career Center and sign up for your appointment!

FREE SAT PREP CLASS - you can still join the free SAT prep class at
Berkeley High.  It's held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:45-5:45
in H207.  Tuesday focuses on the math portion of the test and
Wednesday focuses on the critical reading section.  No sign-up is
necessary.  

*SAT/ACT TEST DATES - April 1 is the regular registration deadline for
the May 3 SAT and SAT subject tests.  May 9 is the regular
registration deadline for the June 14 ACT test.  Fee waivers for low
income students are available in D221.   

JUNIORS AND SENIORS - Interested in a career in the health field?
Come to the College/Career Center to hear about health career pathways
- dental, medical pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy and graduate
programs.  Come on Thursday, March 27 at 2:20 pm (6th period) and get
your invitation to the UC San Francisco Medical Center High School
Outreach Conference, set for Saturday, April 26 from 8:00 am to 4:00
pm at UCSF.  Transportation, breakfast and lunch all provided free.  

FOR SENIORS
*SENIOR GRADES COUNT - Please remember that although this is your last
quarter of your senior year, you must keep your grades up if you are
planning to attend a four year college in the fall.  The college you
are planning to attend will receive a copy of your final transcript.
All admissions decisions are conditional based on your completion of
high school with roughly the same GPA as when you were admitted.
Colleges can and do revoke offers of admission.  Don't let this happen
to you! In addition, if you received a D or an F first semester, you
MUST let each of your colleges know now, if you haven't done so
already.  If you have questions or want to discuss your situation,
please see Ms. Abrams or Ms. Price.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Kiwanis Club of Berkeley - Open to graduating all seniors.
Scholarship criteria includes academic ability, leadership, moral
integrity, and a commitment to service to school and community.  A
total of over $40,000 will be awarded.  Applications available in
D221. Received deadline:  March 28.  

Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival - Graduating senior of
Japanese descent who shows commitment to community, academic
achievement, and personal character.  Two winners of $2,000 each.
Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  March 25. 

Lee Franklin Memorial Scholarship - Open to senior student athletes at
Berkeley High School who have lettered in at least one, and preferably
two, sports at Berkeley High School with an overall minimum unweighted
grade point average of 3.25 who has demonstrated financial need and
plans to enroll in and begin study at a two or four year college in
Fall of 2008.  Applications available in D221,  Scholarship: $1,000.
Deadline:  March 31.  

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

FACES for the Future Program at Children's Hospital, Summer Medical
Academy for students 15 years of age and older.  The program will run
from July 7-18, Mon-Fri, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Children's Hospital
staff, physicians and local experts will lead workshops, labs,
clinical case studies and field trips.  Tuition is $1650 and covers
all program costs including breakfast and lunch, transportation and

Carleton College, "The Carleton Liberal Arts Experience" - Accepted
students receive free room and  Board. Students are responsible for
their own travel to and from the program. The program is for African
American students or students who have an interest in African American
culture.  One week program July 12-July18.  Applications available in
D221.
