SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  AMELIORATE – to improve.  Studying the SAT Word  
of the Day will help you to ameliorate your vocabulary.

FOR ALL GRADES
*Thursday, March 13 – Free panel discussion and Q&A session for  
students interested in a career in quantitative finance.  4:30  
reception; 5:00 program begins; 6:30 reception.  Discover how your  
degree in math, physics, computer science, economics or engineering  
could lead to a career in quantitative finance.  Pre-register at  
www.iafe.org .  Sponsored by Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

VIDEO CONTEST -  Think Globally, Report Locally Video Contest! Students  
are invited to create a one to two minute video news package showing a  
local angle on one of four chosen global issues:  1. Kick the Habit...  
De-carbonizing our Lifestyles and Economies; 2. World Heritage... Local  
Sites and International Interests;  3.	Growing Up Girl... The  
Challenges Facing Girls Everywhere;  4. World Water... Access to Clean  
Water.  The top three teams, consisting of two students and an  
educator, will get an experience of a lifetime - an all expense paid  
trip to New York to attend the United Nations Foundation Youth  
Leadership Summit.  Background information and b-roll is available for  
all four topics on SchoolTube.com.  Deadline:  May 2, 2008, but entries  
uploaded during the months of March and April will also be eligible for

Young Women in Public Affairs Award – Zonta Club of Berkeley/North Bay  
recognizes women ages 16-20 for their participation in public and  
political life, their commitment to the volunteer section, their  
leadership achievements and their dedication to the advancement of the  
status of women. Club winner will receive $1,000.  Applications  
available in D221 and at www.zonta.org .  Deadline:  March 15.

Stanford Black Student Union High School Conference – The conference  
will be held on the Stanford campus in the School of Education,  
Cubberly Hall on April 5 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Open to all black  
students.  The conference includes interactive workshops, on a variety  
of subjects, a tour of the Stanford campus and performances by the  
historically black fraternities and sororities.  Admissions officials  
will meet individually with parents on how to become competitive for  
admission.  $15 fee includes lunch and t-shirt.  Deadline to register:

FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES – The Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium will be  
held June 25-28 at  St. Mary's College of California in Moraga.  There  
is space for 150-200 students.  To be eligible, students must have an  
overall GPA of 2.5 or above and be a current freshman or sophomore in  
high school.  The Hispanic Youth Symposium is a four day, three night  
program that provides:  College access and matriculation information,  
Career exposure, A network of role models and mentors, Culturally  
relevant curriculum, Motivational speakers, Leadership development  
workshops, College life experience and $14,000 in scholarships through  
speech, art, talent, and essay competitions.  Application deadline:

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
SPRING BREAK JOBS – Sarah’s Science is looking for day camp counselors.  
  Students must be at least 16 years old, have experience working with  
children (babysitting counts), a positive attitude and enjoy guiding  
and mentoring children ages 5-12.  Camps are located in Oakland,  
Berkeley and Dublin.  Oakland and Dublin: March 24-28; Berkeley: March  
31-April 4, 8:00 am-5:30 pm.  Pay: $8.00/hour.  Applications available

Summer camp jobs – City of Berkeley, Echo Lake Camp near South Lake  
Tahoe is hiring for maintenance and kitchen staff as well as  
counselors.   Most staff work 8 hour days.  Counselors work about 8  
hours each day through the week and have weekends off.  Shifts vary

NOTE NEW DEADLINE - Camp Galileo is an art, science and outdoor summer  
day camp for kids entering K-5 grade. Volunteer Summer Intern positions  
at Camp Galileo are available for high school students in over 19  
communities throughout the Bay Area.  Summer Interns can earn high  
school community service credits, gain leadership experience, make new  
friends and enjoy an enriching and rewarding summer experience with  
children entering K-5th grades. Summer Interns assist with all aspects  
of camp—from helping kids with art and science classes to setting up  
camp games.  Students can volunteer for 3-8 weeks. Applications

IS APRIL 3. Camps run from 6-8 weeks starting June 16 - August 8.

FOR JUNIORS
EXPERIENCE BERKELEY PROGRAM – This FREE summer program includes panels  
with students, faculty and alumni, personal statement workshops,  
academic planning, financial aid sessions and more.  Students stay in  
the UC Berkeley residence halls during the program. There are two  
separate programs – one for high achieving African American students  
(either July 10-12 or July 31-August 2) and one for high achieving  
Latino students (June 19-21).  This is an excellent program.  Pick up  
your applications in D221.  Deadline for the African American student  
program  is March 14.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – March 21 is the late registration deadline for the  
April 12 ACT test.  April 1 is the regular registration deadline for  
the May 3 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Fee waivers for low income  
students are available in D221.

FOR SENIORS
Gap Year Fair – Sunday, March 16, 2:00-4:00 pm, Jewish Community High  
School of the Bay, 1835 Ellis Street, San Francisco.  Free fair with  
exhibitors offering a variety of gap year options for students who are  
interested in taking some time off before attending college.  For more

Black Employees Association of PG&E – Open to graduating high school  
senior or continuing college student who is a resident of the PG&E  
service area and has a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.50.  Five or more  
students will be awarded scholarships ranging from $250 to $2,500

Unlocking Doors – Open to female high school seniors living in one of  
the 9 counties of the Bay Area whose parent/guardian’s combined annual  
income is not exceeding $45,000, who is the first generation in their  
family to attend a four-year university and who is a U.S. citizen or  
legal resident. $1,000 scholarship.  Applications available in D221.  
Deadline:  March 15.

Janice Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund – Open to seniors with an  
unweighted 2.5 or above who are planning to go to a 4 year college or  
university next year, have demonstrated leadership abilities and are  
U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  Application available in D221.  
Five $2,500 scholarships will be awarded.  Deadline:  March 15

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Carleton College, “The Carleton Liberal Arts Experience” - Accepted  
students receive free room and  Board. Students are responsible for  
their own travel to and from the program. The program is for African  
American students or students who have an interest in African American  
culture.  One week program July 12-July18.  Applications available in  
D221.

COSMOS – California State Summer School for Math and Science.   
Available in a variety of subjects at UC campuses Irvine, Santa Cruz,  
Davis and San Diego.  Open to students completing grades 8-12.   
Although there is no minimum GPA required, admission is competitive.   
The total cost for the 4 week program, including room and board in a  
student residence hall, is $2,310 – financial aid is available.
