SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DELETERIOUS - harmful.  The Surgeon General has  
determined that cigarette smoking is deleterious to your health.

FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES – The Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium will be  
held June 25-28 at  St. Mary's College of California in Moraga.  There  
is space for 150-200 students.  To be eligible, students must have an  
overall GPA of 2.5 or above and be a current freshman or sophomore in  
high school.  The Hispanic Youth Symposium is a four day, three night  
program that provides:  College access and matriculation information,  
Career exposure, A network of role models and mentors, Culturally  
relevant curriculum, Motivational speakers, Leadership development  
workshops, College life experience and $14,000 in scholarships through  
speech, art, talent, and essay competitions.  Application deadline:

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Summer camp jobs – City of Berkeley, Echo Lake Camp near South Lake  
Tahoe is hiring for maintenance and kitchen staff as well as  
counselors.   Most staff work 8 hour days.  Counselors work about 8  
hours each day through the week and have weekends off.  Shifts vary

FOR JUNIORS
EXPERIENCE BERKELEY PROGRAM – This FREE summer program includes panels  
with students, faculty and alumni, personal statement workshops,  
academic planning, financial aid sessions and more.  Students stay in  
the UC Berkeley residence halls during the program. There are two  
separate programs – one for high achieving African American students  
(either July 10-12 or July 31-August 2) and one for high achieving  
Latino students (June 19-21).  This is an excellent program.  Pick up  
your applications in D221.  Deadline for Latino student program is  
February 29, for the African American student program it is March 14.

FOR SENIORS
Thursday, March 6, 8:30 am – if you applied to UC Santa Barbara, come  
to this presentation.  A representative from UCSB will be here to  
answer all of your questions. Sign up in D221 to attend.

Community College Day – March 4 in the College/Career Center.  Get  
information on course offerings, applying, career and transfer  
programs, assessment tests and more.  The schedule is:

The Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship is coming – On Wednesday, March  
5, get information on the scholarship and mentorship programs  
available.  Two kinds of scholarships are available:  $4,000 per year  
for four years including a mentor, and one-time scholarships from $500  
and up.  Presentation will be given twice in Conference Room B, once at  
lunch (12:16-12:56, late start day) and once after school (3:15).  Sign  
up in D221 to attend.

Gap Year Fair – Sunday, March 16, 2:00-4:00 pm, Jewish Community High  
School of the Bay, 1835 Ellis Street, San Francisco.  Free fair with  
exhibitors offering a variety of gap year options for students who are  
interested in taking some time off before attending college.  For more

CAL STATE DEADLINES – March 1 is the application deadline for these  
campuses: Dominguez Hills, East Bay, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Los  
Angeles, Sacramento State, and Monterey Bay. After March 1, due to  
budget cuts, you will not be able to apply for admission to any Cal  
State campus for the fall 2008 term.  If you and need help with your  
application, please see me or Ms. Price as soon as possible.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – March 7 is the regular registration deadline for  
the April 12 ACT test.  April 1 is the regular registration deadline  
for the May 3 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Fee waivers for low income  
students are available in D221.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Asian Employees Association of PG&E – Open to graduating seniors of any  
ethnicity, who live within the PG&E service territory, have a minimum  
unweighted GPA of 3.5 and minimum SAT of 1500 or comparable ACT score,  
are actively involved in community organizations, academic or  
vocational activities and are positive role models in student  
organizations. Application available in D221 or at

will be awarded.  Deadline:  March 1

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Metropolitan Transportation Commission Summer High School Internship  
Program – Students must be at least 16 years old, have completed the  
10th grade and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher (although some students with  
lower GPA will be considered).  Graduating seniors are eligible to  
apply. Interns will learn about opportunities in the transportation  
field and provide assistance to MTC’s transportation partners.  25  
internships available at sites throughout the Bay Area.  Interns are  
paid $9.50 per hour and may work full or part-time for up to 8 weeks  
between June and August.  Applications available in D221 or at
