SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  ENERVATE – to tire; to sap energy from; to  
exhaust.  After a 16-hour day of working in the warehouse, she returned  
home entirely enervated and ready for a good night’s sleep.

African American Education Summit – Saturday, March 1, Cal State East  
Bay, 9:00-3:00.  Includes empowering workshops for students and  
parents; college admission information and resources; financial aid and  
scholarship information; entertainment and vendor expo.  Lunch

FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES – The Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium will be  
held June 25-28 at  St. Mary's College of California in Moraga.  There  
is space for 150-200 students.  To be eligible, students must have an  
overall GPA of 2.5 or above and be a current freshman or sophomore in  
high school.  The Hispanic Youth Symposium is a four day, three night  
program that provides:  College access and matriculation information,  
Career exposure, A network of role models and mentors, Culturally  
relevant curriculum, Motivational speakers, Leadership development  
workshops, College life experience and $14,000 in scholarships through  
speech, art, talent, and essay competitions.  Application deadline:

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Summer camp jobs – City of Berkeley, Echo Lake Camp near South Lake  
Tahoe is hiring for maintenance and kitchen staff as well as  
counselors.   Most staff work 8 hour days.  Counselors work about 8  
hours each day through the week and have weekends off.  Shifts vary

FOR JUNIORS
PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF JUNIORS – If you missed the junior parent night on  
February 5, you may borrow a copy of the DVD for up to two nights.  To

Nordstrom Scholarship Program – Open to juniors in the Bay Area with a  
minimum unweighted GPA of 2.7 who has made a substantial contribution  
to community service, is involved in school activities and demonstrates  
the financial need for a scholarship.  Five $10,000 scholarships will  
be awarded.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 31.

EXPERIENCE BERKELEY PROGRAM – This FREE summer program includes panels  
with students, faculty and alumni, personal statement workshops,  
academic planning, financial aid sessions and more.  Students stay in  
the UC Berkeley residence halls during the program. There are two  
separate programs – one for high achieving African American students  
(either July 10-12 or July 31-August 2) and one for high achieving  
Latino students (June 19-21).  This is an excellent program.  Pick up  
your applications in D221.  Deadline for Latino student program is  
February 29, for the African American student program it is March 14.

JUNIORS – If you haven’t done so already, sign up for a meeting with  
your college advisor.  Students in CAS and AHA sign up with Ms. Abrams.  
  Students in CPA and SSJE sign up with Ms. Price.  Students in AC whose  
last names start with A-Lea sign up with Ms. Abrams; those with last  
names Lee-Z see Ms. Price.  Sign-up sheets will remain available for  
the rest of the semester.

FOR SENIORS
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26 at 8:30 am a representative from Sacramento State  
will be in the College/Career Center to answer your questions.  If you  
applied for admissions for Fall 2008, don’t miss this the chance to get  
information on academics, orientation, assessment tests, class  
registration and much more.  Sign up in D221 to attend.

CAL STATE DEADLINES – March 1 is the application deadline for these  
campuses: Dominguez Hills, East Bay, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Los  
Angeles, Sacramento State, and Monterey Bay. After March 1, due to  
budget cuts, you will not be able to apply for admission to any Cal  
State campus for the fall 2008 term.  If you and need help with your  
application, please see me or Ms. Price as soon as possible.

*FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS – We will be holding workshops on filling out  
the FAFSA both before and after school in the Berkeley High library.  
The last workshop will be held:
Tuesday, February 26, 3:30 pm  - LAST FAFSA WORKSHOP
Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center so that we have  
enough computers for everyone.  Prior to the workshop, pick up the  
FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary  
information.

CAL GRANTS – IF YOU HAVEN’T TURN IN YOUR CAL GRANT GPA INFORMATION  
RELEASE FORM, YOU MUST DO SO IMMEDIATELY!  Cal Grants are free money  
from the state of California based on the student’s GPA and family  
income. The money may be used at any accredited California college,  
public or private. Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy.  You just  
need to fill out two documents.  1.  Fill out and submit the FAFSA by  
March 2 listing a California college to receive the information.  2.  
Fill out the Cal Grant Information Release Form, a very simple form  
available in D173 and D221, and return it to D173 IMMEDIATELY!!!

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – March 7 is the regular registration deadline for  
the April 12 ACT test.  April 1 is the regular registration deadline  
for the May 3 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Fee waivers for low income  
students are available in D221.

SCHOLARSHIPS

*SBC Memorial Foundation –  Open to graduating seniors or college  
students who have volunteered for a significant number of hours within  
the last 18 months, have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0, live in the  
greater San Francisco Bay Area  and plan on attending a two or four  
year academic, vocational or technical school in the fall.  $1,000  
scholarship.  Applications available in D221 and at  
www.sbcfoundation.org . Deadline:  March 1.

Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Scholarship for Social Justice – Open  
to students who plan to attend and have been admitted to a two or four  
year college or university in fall 2008, participated in work to  
further the cause of social justice while in high school and plan to  
continue in college, have financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.5.   
Several $1,000 or more scholarships will be awarded.  Applications  
available in D221.  Deadline:  April 15.

Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship for the Arts – Scholarships offered  
in voice, acting and dance.  Open to seniors who are legal residents of  
the U.S.  One winner from each category will be awarded $10,000 to be  
used for higher education. Applications available in D221.  Deadline:   
April 25.

Lend A Hand Foundation – Open to all graduating seniors.  $500  
scholarship.  Deadline:  March 1.  Applications available in D221.

New American College Fund – Open to foreign-born graduating seniors  
planning to enroll in a two or four year college in fall 2008 who have  
financial need, have lived in California for three or more years during  
high school, have community or extracurricular involvement and have a  
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0.  Scholarships of up to $5,000.   
Applications available in D221 and at http://www.e4fc.org/ . Deadline:   
March 5.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Award - Graduating senior planning to enroll in  
college in the fall who is a US citizen or permanent resident, has at  
least one parent of Hispanic heritage, minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0  
and is willing to travel to the awards ceremony in your area (Northern  
California).  Grants of $1,000 to $3,000 will be awarded.  Applications  
available at http://youthawards.hispanicheritage.org . Deadline:  March  
14.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Metropolitan Transportation Commission Summer High School Internship  
Program – Students must be at least 16 years old, have completed the  
10th grade and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher (although some students with  
lower GPA will be considered).  Graduating seniors are eligible to  
apply. Interns will learn about opportunities in the transportation  
field and provide assistance to MTC’s transportation partners.  25  
internships available at sites throughout the Bay Area.  Interns are  
paid $9.50 per hour and may work full or part-time for up to 8 weeks  
between June and August.  Applications available in D221 or at  
www.mtc.ca.gov/jobs/high_school .  Deadline:  March 28.

Camp Galileo is an art, science and outdoor summer day camp for kids  
entering K-5 grade. Volunteer Summer Intern positions at Camp Galileo  
are available for high school students in over 19 communities  
throughout the Bay Area.  Summer Interns can earn high school community  
service credits, gain leadership experience, make new friends and enjoy  
an enriching and rewarding summer experience with children entering  
K-5th grades. Summer Interns assist with all aspects of camp—from  
helping kids with art and science classes to setting up camp games.   
Students can volunteer for 3-8 weeks. Applications available online at:

Camps run from 6-8 weeks starting June 16th - August 8th.

Cal Shakes Summer Theater Programs - Cal Shakes is offering five- and  
two-week conservatories as well as a two-week camp. While slightly  
different in class content and structure, each program is suitable for  
all ages and levels of experience. Scholarships are available.  There  
will be an open house on Monday, Feb 25, 6:30-8pm at the Orinda  
Community Center, 26 Orinda Way, Orinda.  For more information, go to
