STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

Administration

*1. If you are thinking about taking an AP English or History course,
please come to one of the information sessions on Thursday and Friday
at lunch.  Thursday will be AP Language and Composition (Ms. Tebbe and
Mr. Bye) in room C216 and AP Literature and Composition in room C213.
Friday will be AP US History (Mr. Moellering) and AP Econ and Govt.
(Mr. Colon and Mr. Meyer) in room G201.  Come hear from teachers and
current students in these courses!

*2. Students interested in taking AP Bio next year should attend an
informational meeting in G208 on Monday, February 25 at lunch.
Students interested in taking AP Environmental Science should attend
an informational meeting in G209 on Monday, February 25 at lunch.  If
you missed the AP Chem and AP Physics meetings and want info, contact
Mr. Glimme in G215.

3. Student directories are here!  Please pick one up if you have not
done so. They will be available to anyone in the administration
office.

4. Tutors are back in the SLC.  Chemistry study session on Monday and
Wednesday after school.

5. BART Tickets have arrived - please pick up your tickets by February
25th in room D224 at lunchtime and after school.

6. BSEP applications are available!  Online copies are available.  You
can pick up copies from the administration office.


Clubs

1. Are you a leader or looking to become one?  Do you have creative
ideas for social activities, service projects or fundraisers and are
motivated to take action?  Are you a photographer, journalist, artist,
or website builder?  Think you can find some ways to better appreciate
our staff?  If your answer is yes to any of these questions ASB wants
you to fill out an application for one of our new positions available
in D148!  Do it now because applications are due February 26.

*2. Earphone English in C116 at lunch today.  Come see the end of the
movie!  Or just trade in books as usual.


Sports

*1. Congratulations to both the boys and girls basketball teams on
their co-league championship - girls with Hercules and boys with El
Cerrito.  Both BHS teams won the automatic bid to the NCS Division I
basketball tournament in exciting close games last Saturday.  The NCS
tournament begins tonight!  The boys will play Amador Valley at 7:30
in the Donahue Gym.  The girls will play Friday at 7:30 in the Donahue
Gym against the winner of tonight's Granada vs. Liberty game.  No
passes are accepted for these games.  Tickets are $8 adult/ $5
student/senior.  Brackets for all NCS Games can be found at

*2. Congratulations to Junior Koji Jagust and Senior Gabriel Jackson
for making it to the BSAL Wrestling Championship Finals last Friday at
Albany High School.  Koji finished 1st with a 10-3 win and Gabriel
placed 2nd. Koji and Gabriel will be representing Berkeley High at the
NCS Championships this Friday at Newark Memorial High School.  Good
Luck Wrestlers.


Senior / Junior Section

1. SAT/ACT Test dates- March 7 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 12 ACT test.  April 1 is the regular registration
deadline for the May 3 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Fee waivers for low
income students are available in D221.  

2. SENIORS: FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS - The College Advisors will be
holding workshops on filling out the FAFSA both before and after
school in the Berkeley High library. The next two workshops are: 
Wed., February 20, 7:30 am 
Wed., February 20, 6:30 pm - CASH FOR COLLEGE NIGHT.  
If at least 25 students are present, one will win a $1,000
scholarship.  Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center
so that we have enough computers for everyone.  Prior to the workshop,
pick up the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the
necessary information.  For a complete list of workshops, go to

3. If you are considering attending a Cal State campus, you must sign
up to take placement tests - ELM for math and EPT for English.
Students who score 550 or higher on the SAT math or 23 or higher on
the ACT math are excused from the math test.  Students who score 550
or higher on the SAT critical reading section or 24 or higher on the
ACT English are excused from the English placement test.  You must
have the results from the placement tests before you can register for
classes, so take the earliest possible test.  You can take the test at
any Cal State campus and the results will be sent to all CSU campuses.

Francisco State, go to www.sfsu.edu/~testing/ee.html .  If you do not
have a SF State ID number, enter your social security number.  The fee
for each test is $18, which can be paid on the day of the test.

*4. African American Education Summit - Saturday, March 1, Cal State
East Bay, 9:00-3:00.  Includes empowering workshops for students and
parents; college admission information and resources; financial aid
and scholarship information; entertainment and vendor expo.  Lunch and
transportation provided.  For more information and to register, go to

*5. SUMMER - Metropolitan Transportation Commission Summer High School
Internship Program - Students must be at least 16 years old, have
completed the 10th grade and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher (although
some students with lower GPA will be considered).  Graduating seniors
are eligible to apply. Interns will learn about opportunities in the
transportation field and provide assistance to MTC's transportation
partners.  25 internships available at sites throughout the Bay Area.
Interns are paid $9.50 per hour and may work full or part-time for up
to 8 weeks between June and August.  Applications available in D221 or
at http://www.mtc.ca.gov/jobs/high_school . Deadline:  March 28.     

*6. FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES - The Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium
will be held June 25-28 at  St. Mary's College of California in
Moraga.  There is space for 150-200 students.  To be eligible,
students must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or above and be a current
freshman or sophomore in high school.  The Hispanic Youth Symposium is
a four day, three night program that provides:  College access and
matriculation information, Career exposure, A network of role models
and mentors, Culturally relevant curriculum, Motivational speakers,
Leadership development workshops, College life experience and $14,000
in scholarships through speech, art, talent, and essay competitions.

*7. SCHOLARSHIPS - Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship for the Arts -
Scholarships offered in the areas of voice, acting and dance.  Open to
seniors who are legal residents of the U.S.  One winner from each
category will be awarded $10,000 to be used for higher education.
Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  April 25.  

8. Did you apply to San Francisco State?  Wednesday, February 20 at
10:35 pm, a representative from San Francisco State will be in the
College/Career Center to answer your questions about your application
if you have not yet been admitted as well as about enrolling at SF
State in the fall.  Sign up in D221 to attend.

9. There are many more scholarship applications available in D221.
Don't miss these great opportunities to get free money for college.

*10. Applications for CSF, Berkeley high School's Honor Society, are
now available in the College Career Center, Membership is available to
10th-12th graders who meet certain academic and community service
requirements.  Completed applications are due by Friday, February 22

Events/Performances

1. Youth Spirit Art Works is holding an art competition for Berkeley
youth, giving young people the opportunity to create art designs for
wooden benches along the Adeline Street Corridor in South Berkeley.
