STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

Administration

1. LATE START WEDNESDAY IS FEBRUARY 13th!

*2. Student directories are here!  Please pick one up if you have not done so. 
They will be available to anyone in the administration office.

*3. Tutors are back in the SLC.  Chemistry study session on Monday and
Wednesday after school.

4. A paid summer internship- BIOTECH Academy is where you want to be!
If you are interested and a sophomore go to G305 or G304 to pick up an
application.  Must have at least 2.0 GPA, available to work 8 weeks
from July-August and must have taken Chemistry or will be taking
Chemistry next year.  Application deadline is February 14th.

5. BART Tickets have arrived - please pick up your tickets by
February 25th in room D224 at lunchtime and after school.

6. If you are interested in being a part of leadership there are ASB
positions open for all classes.  Come to D148 to pick-up application.
Positions available are: Service commissioner, Social Activities
Commissioner, Fundraising Commissioner, Press Officer, Publicity
Artists (2 positions open), Historian, and webmaster. Applications are
due February 22!!

7. The People's Test Preparation Service will be offering free SAT
prep classes at Berkeley High on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to
5:30 beginning on Wednesday, February 13 through April 30th.  We need
a room to hold the class.  Please let me know if you can make your
room available during this time period.  These classes are very
helpful to our students, so any assistance you can provide would be
great.

8. BSEP applications are available!  Online copies are available.  You
can pick up copies from the administration office.

9. Applications for CSF, Berkeley High School's Honor Society, are now
available in the College Career Center, Membership is available to 10th-12th
graders who meet certain academic and community service requirements. 
Completed applications are due by Friday, February 22 in the College 
Career Center.

Sports

*1. Boy's Lacrosse - team & parent meetings
Wednesday, Feb 13: JV & Varsity Team Meeting - Players Only 6-8pm in 
Food Court 
Pizza, beverages and dessert will be provided to the team. Parent 
volunteers are needed
at the meeting. Players remember to bring five addresses of family and
friends.  And, Thursday Feb 14: Lacrosse Parent Meeting--7-8:30 pm in 
College and
Career Center. If interested in assisting at either of these meetings

Senior / Junior Section

1. CAL STATE DEADLINES: March 1 is the application deadline for these
campuses:  Dominguez Hills, East Bay, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Los
Angeles, Sacramento State, and Monterey Bay.  After March 1, due to
budget cuts, you will not be able to apply for admission to any Cal
State campus for the Fall 2008 term.  If you need help with your
application, please see Ms. Price or Ms. Abrams as soon as possible.

2. JUNIORS - February 12 at 8:00 am is the first day that juniors may
sign up in D221 for an appointment with their College Advisor.
Sign-up sheets will remain available for the rest of the semester.

3.  FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS - The College Advisors will be holding
workshops on filling out the FAFSA both before and after school in the
Berkeley High library. Come to get one-on-one help in filling out this
form is required to apply for financial aid for all two and four year
colleges in the U.S.  The next two workshops are:
Wed., February 13, 3:30 pm
Wed., February 20, 7:30 am
Wed., February 20, 6:30 pm - CASH FOR COLLEGE NIGHT.  If at least 25
students are present, one will win a $1,000 scholarship. 
Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center so that we have
enough computers for everyone.  Prior to the workshop, pick up the
FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary
information.  For a complete list of workshops, go to

4. CAL GRANTS - Cal grants are free money from the state of California
based on the student's GPA and family income. The money may be used at
any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the
Cal Grant is very easy -just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2
listing a California college to receive the information and fill out
the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.
This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to
complete.  Deadline to turn in the form is January 30.

5. SAT/ACT Test dates- March 7 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 12 ACT test.  Subject tests are not offered on this test
date.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.

6. If you are considering attending a Cal State campus, you must sign
up to take placement tests - ELM for math and EPT for English.
Students who score 550 or higher on the SAT math or 23 or higher on
the ACT math are excused from the math test.  Students who score 550
or higher on the SAT critical reading section or 24 or higher on the
ACT English are excused from the English placement test.  You must
have the results from the placement tests before you can register for
classes, so take the earliest possible test.  You can take the test at
any Cal State campus and the results will be sent to all CSU campuses.
To sign up at Cal State East Bay, go to
www.testing.csuhayward.edu/eptelm/eptelmhome.php .  To sign up at San
Francisco State, go to www.sfsu.edu/~testing/ee.html .  If you do not
have a SF State ID number, enter your social security number.  The fee
for each test is $18, which can be paid on the day of the test. 

7. SENIORS - Did you apply to San Francisco State?  Wednesday,
February 20 at 10:35 pm, a representative from San Francisco State
will be in the College/Career Center to answer your questions about
your application if you have not yet been admitted as well as about
enrolling at SF State in the fall.  Sign up in D221 to attend.

8. SCHOLARSHIPS - There are many more scholarship applications
available in D221.  Don't miss these great opportunities to get free
money for college:

Burger King Scholars Program - Open to seniors with a minimum
unweighted GPA of 2.5 who work an average of 15 hours per week, 40
weeks per year, are actively involved in community service activities,
have financial need and are enrolling in an accredited two or four
year college or vocational or technical school in the fall.  Apply at
www.bk.com/scholars .  Up to 700 scholarships of $1,000 each will be
awarded.  Deadline:  February 15. 

eQuality Scholarship Collaborative - Open to graduating high school
seniors residing in northern or central California who applied to a
two or four year secondary institution, including trade schools and
has promoted awareness and equality for the gay/lesbian/bisexual/
transgender community.  Scholarship:  $5,000.  Applications available
in D221 and at

ips/equalityscholarshipapplication2008.doc .  Deadline:  February 15.

Best Buy Scholarship - Open to graduating seniors who have an
unweighted cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, demonstrate commitment to
and involvement in volunteer community service or work experience and
plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two or four year college in
the U.S.  Application is available at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships
Students must apply online.  1,500 students will each be awarded
$1,500 and 51 students will each receive $10,000.  Deadline:  February
15. 

Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarship Program - Open to seniors
who are legal US residents and are planning to attend a two or four
year college or vocational school.  There are numerous scholarships
available of $1,000 or more.  Applications available in D221.
