Administration

1. California High School Exit Exams are happening February 5th and 6th
for ALL TENTH GRADERS!  Please be at the Jacket Gym at 7:30 am each
morning.

2. BSEP Meeting is February 5, 2008 from 5-6:30 PM.  Agenda: Introductions
Approval of meetings from last meeting; Approval of Agenda; Public
Comment; Chair report; Presentation and Discussion of Program Evaluation;
Update on Program evaluation; P & O Committee report; SGC report; End of
meeting.

3. Attention all students- This is the last week of Winter Ball ticket
Sales!  Winter Ball is on Saturday, February 9th and tickets will not be
sold at the door. Tickets are $55 at the box office.  Get your tickets
now, so you don’t miss out on this event.  If you already purchased your
tickets, you can pick them up at the box office- with the receipt.

4. Willard Mathworks needs you!  Receive tutoring, community service and
even leadership credit for tutoring middle school students. Tuesdays
3-4:30 PM.  Come to our meeting at BHS in room H115 on Tuesday, February
5th at 3:30 PM for more information.

5. BSEP applications are available!  Online copies are
available. You can pick up copies from the administration office.


Clubs
Sports

1. Are you interested in playing tennis for Berkeley High?  Come to
tryouts Monday, February 4- Wednesday, February 6th at the MLK Jr Tennis
Courts on Hopkins Street.  Be prepared to show your stuff from 4pm – 6pm
and make sure you bring your athletic packet with a physical. If rtaining,

2. Track and Field sign-ups: Tryouts begin February 4th at 4:30 pm.

3. Attention all boys who want to play BHS volleyball: Bring complete
athletic packets to the first meeting on February 4 at 3:30 pm in
front of the athletic office.  Tryouts start Tuesday, February 5 at
6:00 pm in the Old Gym. Wear workout attire.  Contact Coach Chris Palk

Senior / Junior Section

1. Seniors: February 4, 2:20 PM in the College/Career Center- Want to take
some time off before you go to college?  Come to hear information on City
Year in San Jose.  City Year is a non-profit Americorps program.  Students
serve as mentors and tutors in San Jose elementary schools as well as run
after school programs on campus.  For more information go to [

2. THE FOLLOWING CAL STATE CAMPUSES WILL ACCEPT APPLICATIONS UNTIL
MARCH 1:  DOMINGUEZ HILLS, EAST BAY, SAN BERNARDINO, BAKERSFIELD, LOS
ANGELES, SACRAMENTO STATE, AND MONTEREY BAY.  February 1 is the last
day to file applications for admission to any other CSU campus still
accepting applications.  This change is due to budget cuts.  If you
are considering applying to any of the open campuses (Channel Islands,
Chico (except nursing and recording arts majors), Fresno, Fullerton
(open to engineering and computer science majors only), San Jose, San
Marcos (if space is available), Sonoma (except for interdisciplinary
studies, human development, liberal studies and nursing) and
Stanislaus) and need help with your application, please see Ms. Abrams
or Ms. Price as soon as possible

3. SAT/ACT Test dates- February 7 is late registration deadline for the
March 1 SAT tests.  March 7 is the regular registration deadline for the
April 12 ACT test.  Subject tests are not offered on this test date.  Fee
waivers for low income students are available in D221.

4. For Juniors- Nordstrom Scholarship Program: Open to juniors in the Bay
area with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.7 who has made a substantial
contribution to community service, is involved in school activities and
demonstrates the financial need for a scholarship.  Five $10,000
scholarships will be awarded.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:
May 31.

5. EXPERIENCE BERKELEY PROGRAM - This FREE summer program includes
panels with students, faculty and alumni, personal statement
workshops, academic planning, financial aid sessions and more.
Students stay in the UC Berkeley residence halls during the program.
There are two separate programs - one for high achieving African
American students (either July 10-12 or July 31-August 2) and one for
high achieving Latino students (June 19-21).  Pick up your
applications in D221.  Deadline for Latino student program is February
29, for the African American student program it is March 14.

6. SCHOLARSHIPS- The complete list of applications is available in the
College Career Center and at

- Japanese American Citizens League Scholarship- open to high school
seniors who are members of the Berkeley Chapter of the Japanese
American Citizens League and will be attending college in Fall 2008.
Deadline- March 1.  Scholarships: Up to $1,200.  Applications
available in D221.
- PDK Prospective Educator Scholarship program- open to any high
school senior intending to major in education.  A variety of
scholarships will be offered. Applications available in D221.
Deadline-February 1st.
- Community Network, Lewis Latimer- open to African American seniors
with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a  two or four year
accredited college or business school majoring in computer science or
the telecommunications industry.  Scholarships of at least $500 will
be awarded.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline- February 29.

7. Cal Grants- Cal grants are free money from the state of California
based on the student's GPA and family income. The money may be used at
any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the
Cal Grant is very easy -just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2
listing a California college to receive the information and fill out
the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.
This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to
complete.  Deadline to turn in the form is January 30.

8. Free Latino Education Summit- Saturday, February 2, Cal State East
Bay Gymnasium, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward.  Conference: 8:30 am
to 2:30 pm; Resource Fair: 10:00 am - 2:30 pm. Includes free lunch and
parking.  Learn more about health, education, and scholarship
resources.  Inspirational speakers and workshops. Open to parents,
students, teachers, and counselors.  On the spot college admission
available for seniors.  Because space is limited, you must register to
attend.  Forms available in D221 or at www.csueastbay.edu.


Events/Performances

1. The 7th Annual Historically Black Colleges and University tour will
be held April 1- April 8, 2008 (Tour A).  If any student is interested
in the tour, please see Mrs. Parker in room D224.
