1. BSEP applications are available TODAY!  Online copies are
available. You can pick up copies from the administration office.

*2. BART tickets orders will be taken on January 29th and 30th at
lunchtime.  Only in room D224.  Ticket price is $16.  You may purchase
as many tickets as you would like.  Cash only.  Tickets will arrive to
BHS within 7-10 workdays from BART.

3. The School of Social Justice and Ecology is hosting an Electronics
Recycling Drive @ Berkeley High School Parking Lot from 8am to 4 pm on
Saturday, February 2, 2008.  Universal waste includes televisions,
monitors, laptops, flat screens, DVD Players, CPU's, printers, cell
phones and even stereos that are found today in homes and business.

4. Verifications for 1st semester PE waivers are due in the
registrar's by 01/25/2008.  The yellow copy of the PE waiver or a note
from your coach verifying you completed the required hours will be
accepted.  If you have any questions, please contact Vice Principal
Vernon Walton.


Clubs

1. The Berkeley Rhino Rugby Club is seeking new high school age
players for the Winter/Spring 2008 season.  Practices are 5-7 pm
Tuesday and Thursday at San Pablo Park, Berkeley starting December
13th.  No experience required.  All sizes welcome; boys age 14 to 18.
This youth rugby club coached by Keir Paasch, former Cal Rugby player,
is made up of high school boys from various schools including
Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito and CPS.  Rugby is a fast paced game
involving running, kicking and tackling.  Call the hotline for more

2. The Berkeley high Student Court is now accepting applications from
those who are interested in becoming student lawyers.  A UC Berkeley
law student will teach you and you will earn 5 elective credits in
return for your work.  Step up your commitment to your future; learn
public speaking, meet new friends, and help make a difference at your
school.  Come to H104 and ask to speak to Mr. Luu for more
information.


Sports

1. Track and Field sign-ups: Tryouts begin February 4th at 4:30 pm.

2. Congratulations to the Berkeley Wrestling Team for scoring a 42-30
win over visiting Athenian last Thursday.  Thanks to all who came out
to support the wrestlers. The next dual meet is Thursday, January 24
versus the California School for the Deaf at Berkeley High.

3. Attention all boys who want to play BHS volleyball: Bring complete
athletic packets to the first meeting on February 4 at 3:30 pm in
front of the athletic office.  Tryouts start Tuesday, February 5 at
6:00 pm in the Old Gym. Wear workout attire.  Contact Coach Chris Palk

5. To all spring athletes:  ***Tryouts begin Monday February 4th *** A
list of valid athletic packets is posted on the athletic department
window.  If you believe you have already turned in your packet, please
check the list to be sure you are on it.  It's less than two weeks
before tryouts.  If you haven't scheduled a physical, do so
immediately!


Senior / Junior Section

1. THE FOLLOWING CAL STATE CAMPUSES WILL ACCEPT APPLICATIONS UNTIL
MARCH 1:  DOMINGUEZ HILLS, EAST BAY, SAN BERNARDINO, BAKERSFIELD, LOS
ANGELES, SACRAMENTO STATE, AND MONTEREY BAY.  February 1 is the last
day to file applications for admission to any other CSU campus still
accepting applications.  This change is due to budget cuts.  If you
are considering applying to any of the open campuses (Channel Islands,
Chico (except nursing and recording arts majors), Fresno, Fullerton
(open to engineering and computer science majors only), San Jose, San
Marcos (if space is available), Sonoma (except for interdisciplinary
studies, human development, liberal studies and nursing) and
Stanislaus) and need help with your application, please see Ms. Abrams
or Ms. Price as soon as possible

2. SAT/ACT TEST DATES - January 29 is the regular registration
deadline for the March 1 SAT tests. March 7 is the regular
registration deadline for the April 12 ACT test.  Subject tests are
not offered on this test date.  Fee waivers for low income students
are available in D221.

3. EXPERIENCE BERKELEY PROGRAM - This FREE summer program includes
panels with students, faculty and alumni, personal statement
workshops, academic planning, financial aid sessions and more.
Students stay in the UC Berkeley residence halls during the program.
There are two separate programs - one for high achieving African
American students (either July 10-12 or July 31-August 2) and one for
high achieving Latino students (June 19-21).  Pick up your
applications in D221.  Deadline for Latino student program is February
29, for the African American student program it is March 14.

4. Financial Aid Workshops - We will be holding workshops on filling
out the FAFSA both before and after school in the Berkeley High
Library.  The next two workshops are: Thursday, February 7, 7:30 am or
an evening workshop, Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 pm, BHS Library.
Please sign up in advance in the College/Career center so that we have
enough computers for everyone.  Prior to the workshop, pick up the
FAFSA  on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary

5. SCHOLARSHIPS- The complete list of applications is available in the
College Career Center and at

- Japanese American Citizens League Scholarship- open to high school
seniors who are members of the Berkeley Chapter of the Japanese
American Citizens League and will be attending college in Fall 2008. 
Deadline- March 1.  Scholarships: Up to $1,200.  Applications
available in D221.
- PDK Prospective Educator Scholarship program- open to any high
school senior intending to major in education.  A variety of
scholarships will be offered. Applications available in D221. 
Deadline-February 1st.
- Community Network, Lewis Latimer- open to African American seniors
with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a  two or four year
accredited college or business school majoring in computer science or
the telecommunications industry.  Scholarships of at least $500 will
be awarded.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline- February 29.

6. Cal Grants- Cal grants are free money from the state of California
based on the student's GPA and family income. The money may be used at
any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the
Cal Grant is very easy -just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2
listing a California college to receive the information and fill out
the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.
This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to
complete.  Deadline to turn in the form is January 30.

7. Free Latino Education Summit- Saturday, February 2, Cal State East
Bay Gymnasium, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward.  Conference: 8:30 am
to 2:30 pm; Resource Fair: 10:00 am - 2:30 pm. Includes free lunch and
parking.  Learn more about health, education, and scholarship
resources.  Inspirational speakers and workshops. Open to parents,
students, teachers, and counselors.  On the spot college admission
available for seniors.  Because space is limited, you must register to
attend.  Forms available in D221 or at www.csueastbay.edu.


Events/Performances

1. Do you want to be Prince or Princess at Winter Ball? Applications
are available in D148.  Please have all forms completed and turned in
to Mr. Young by February 1st.

*2. Screenagers: 10th annual Bay Area high School Film and Video
Festival, Saturday, Feb. 2, 1:00 pm, 3:30 pm (two screenings/same
show); Tickets are $5 for everyone.  Pacific Film Archive/UC Berkeley
- 2575 Bancroft Way @Bowditch, Berkeley.  Tickets are available from
the PFA box office one hour prior to the first showtime.  Advanced
tickets may be purchased by phone (credit card only) by calling
510-642-5249.

3. The 7th Annual Historically Black Colleges and University tour will
be held April 1- April 8, 2008 (Tour A).  If any student is interested
in the tour, please see Mrs. Parker in room D224.


JOB OPPORTUNITY

Lifeguard I - East Bay Regional Park District is hiring students age
16 years old (by April 26) for lifeguard positions.  Salary begins at
$13 per hour.  Applications available in D221 or at
http://www.ebparks.org .  Deadline:  March 7.
